ARLINGTON, Texas (September 25, 2023) – The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals had four individuals go as deep as the quarterfinals of the main draw of the ITA South Central Region Championships at Arlington Tennis Center.
LCU's doubles team of
Axelle Jacquemin and
Anastasiia Opolska went 3-1 and were semifinalists in the main doubles draw. Jacquemin/Opolska made noise in the quarterfinals by upsetting the No.1-seeded doubles team of Mieke Van Deventer and Eva Schwartz of Angelo State. They followed the high with a gut-wrenching 10-8 third-set tiebreaking loss in the semifinals to Sofia Teran and Isabella Rios of Dallas Baptist (eventual event doubles champions).
In singles, LCU's flight of main draw individuals combined to go 14-7.
Andrea De Bernardo, Jacquemin and
Michelle Trochez each went 3-1 in singles play, with De Bernardo and Trochez advancing to the quarterfinals. Unseeded De Bernardo defeated a pair of seeded individuals with wins over No.3 Letizia Corsini (Angelo State) and No. 10 Leonie Schondelmaier (Dallas Baptist). Trochez, who was a No.11-seed, claimed a win in the round-of-16 over No.6 Jessica Binzari (Midwestern State). In the consolation bracket of the main draw, unseeded Jacquemin claimed a quarterfinals victory over No.16 Teodora Vrucan (UT Permian Basin), but she did not a play a semifinal round match, as she was to face teammate Opolska, who also advanced to the consolation bracket semifinals.
In the B-flight, LCU's doubles team of
Maya Adler and
Gracie Wood fell in their opener, but rebounded with a pair of wins to win the B-flight consolation final. In B-flight singles,
Oshini Herath went 3-0.
The Lady Chaps will play one additional invitational (non-duals) match to complete their fall schedule. Oct. 6, LCU heads to Wichita Falls, Texas to compete in the midwestern State Invitational.
