LUBBOCK, Texas - Tiras Morton secured his seventh double-double on the season with 24 points and 10 rebounds to help the Lubbock Christian University Men's Basketball team beat UT Permian Basin 79-69 at home Thursday night.
In addition to Morton's strong output, the Chaparrals (11-4, 6-1) were led by Najeeb Muhammad, who had 18 points, and by Aaron Gonzales, who added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Gonzales pulled down five offensive rebounds to pace the Lubbock Christian offense which grabbed 16 boards and turned them into 15 second chance points.
The Lubbock Christian defense held Texas-Permian Basin shooters to only 37.5 percent from the field. The Falcons did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only seven offensive rebounds and scored 12 second chance points while Lubbock Christian pulled down 26 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 29-15 advantage, Lubbock Christian went on a 5-0 run with 5:45 left in the first half to increase its lead to 34-15. The Chaparrals then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 40-27 advantage. Lubbock Christian got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 17 of its 40 total points.
Lubbock Christian kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Muhammad's layup, to grow the lead to 59-45 with 9:42 to go in the contest. The Falcons narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Chaparrals still cruised the rest of the way for the 79-69 win. Lubbock Christian took care of business in the paint, recording 22 of its 39 points in the lane.
