ROME, Ga. (October 13, 2024) -- Lubbock Christian University's
Axelle Jacquemin and
Andrea De Bernardo made program history this weekend, becoming the first women's tennis players from LCU to compete at the ITA Cup. The pair, at-large qualifiers after reaching the finals at the South Central Regional, faced tough competition across three matches at Rome Tennis Center.
Their opening round saw a straight-set loss to Roisin Boyd and Katarina Liedbeck of Adelphi, 6-3, 7-5. On Day 2, Jacquemin and De Bernardo rebounded in the second set against Jessica Binzari and Anda Ghinga of Midwestern State but ultimately fell 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) in the deciding tiebreak. In their final match, the duo lost a close tiebreak in the first set before losing 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 to Angelina Linnikova and Carolina Reis of North Georgia.
The tournament marked a significant milestone for LCU women's tennis, highlighting the team's growth on the national stage. The duo's performance, despite the losses, was a step forward for the program, showcasing their resilience and ability to compete against top Division II talent.
Jacquemin and De Bernardo's trio of losses places their overall season record at 9-4 this season. The ITA Cup closes out LCU's fall schedule, as they move into duals play next semester.
