Chaps Drop Home Match to Sul Ross State 3-1

LCU Loses Inaugural Match With the Lobos

LUBBOCK, Texas (October 16, 2024) – Lubbock Christian University fell 3-1 at home to Sul Ross State in Wednesday's match at LCU Soccer and Track Complex. In their first-ever meeting, the Lobos secured the win with six total shots, four of which were on target.

Sul Ross State moved to 6-5 on the season and 2-2 within the Lone Star Conference following their win. The Lobos are now on a two-game winning streak and rank sixth in the conference. Lubbock Christian dropped to 4-4-4 overall and 1-2-2 in Lone Star action after the loss, moving into eighth place in the conference standings.
 
How it Happened

Sul Ross State started the scoring when Carlos Gonzalez scored in the 72nd minute.

The Lobos went up 2-0 on a goal from Lewis Coates in the 80th minute, assisted by Zachary Trimming.

Lubbock Christian closed the gap to 2-1 on Saimon Gjeci's 86th minute goal, his second of the season. Justin Martinez assisted the goal, by sending a crossing pass to Gjeci between Sul Ross State defenders.

The Lobos made it a 3-1 lead with an 89th-minute goal from Trimming, which slammed the door on a potential Chaparral rally. The goal ended scoring, as the final score was 3-1 Sul Ross State.
 
Game Notes

  • Connor Pettigrew totaled one save for the Chaparrals out of six total Lobo shots, bringing his season total to 49, which is the highest overall number of saves in the Lone Star Conference.
  • Saimon Gjeci netted his second goal, entering a three-way tie for second most on the team.
  • The all-time series begins at 1-0-0 in favor of Sul Ross State.
  • Lubbock Christian is now 1-2-3 at home this season.

After a two game homestand, Lubbock Christian will travel to Oklahoma City, Okla. to take on Oklahoma Christian in their next match on Saturday. The Eagles are 5-4-3 overall and 2-2-1 in Lone Star action. Oklahoma Christian fell to Eastern New Mexico 1-0 in Portales on Wednesday. The Chaparrals and Eagles will look to rebound when they have first touch at approximately 3:00 p.m. from the Eagle Soccer Field in Oklahoma City.
