Chaps Fall at Home to Rival WT 1-0

LCU Unable To End Home Struggles, Winless In Fifth Consecutive Home Game

LUBBOCK, Texas (October 23, 2024) -- Lubbock Christian University fell 1-0 at home to West Texas A&M on Wednesday at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex. The Buffaloes secured their first conference win of the season, prevailing in this year's edition of the "Rivalry on the Range."

Lubbock Christian dropped to 5-5-4 overall and 2-3-2 in Lone Star Conference play after the loss, continuing their struggles at home with a record of 1-3-3. The Chaparrals haven't secured a home victory since defeating Adams State 2-0 on September 7. Meanwhile, West Texas A&M improved to 3-6-4 overall and 1-2-3 in conference action, earning their first conference win of the season and their first victory since a September 21 matchup against Hawaii Pacific.

How it Happened

Lubbock Christian and West Texas A&M were held scoreless in the first half.

After the break, the Chaparrals surrendered the lone goal, which led to the eventual West Texas A&M victory. The Buffaloes were able to break the scoreless drought in the 57th minute when Philip Leano was able to gather the rebound after a shot from Matteo Landais, who was credited with the assist.

Despite the slim defeat, Connor Pettigrew led Lubbock Christian with seven saves, and the Chaparrals registered 11 shots, five of them on goal.

Game Notes

  • Pettigrew recorded seven saves for the Chaparrals out of 19 total Buffaloes shots, bringing his Lone Star leading total to 59.
  • Lubbock Christian put five shots on goal for their sixth consecutive match.
  • West Texas A&M extends their all-time series lead to 11-8-1, winning the last three matches against the Chaparrals.
  • Lubbock Christian moves to 1-3-3 in home matches this season.

What's Next?

Lubbock Christian will enter the final part of their schedule by participating in a two-game road trip, with the first stop happening against Dallas Baptist in Dallas. Dallas Baptist holds a 4-3-6 overall and 3-1-2 Lone Star record, with a 1-0 win over Eastern New Mexico in their last match. The Chaparrals and the Patriots have already faced off this season in a match on Sept. 25th, which ended in a 0-0 tie that was not counted toward Lone Star Conference results. Lubbock Christian and Dallas Baptist will look to make a late season push when they have first touch at approximately 7:00 p.m. from Patriot Soccer Field in Dallas. FloSports will carry the match online and it can be viewed at lcuchaps.com/live.
