LUBBOCK, Texas (November 23, 2024) – Maci Maddox poured in 13 of her 17 points in the first half, while Grace Foster delivered 12 of her game-high 22 points in the second, as their balanced effort powered Lubbock Christian University to an 87-61 victory over Midwestern State in the Lone Star Conference West Division opener Saturday at Rip Griffin Center.
The Lady Chaps remain unbeaten this season (7-0, 2-0) and open West Division play with a 1-0 record. They had three players score in double figures, led by Foster, who had 22 points, six rebounds and six assists. Maci Maddox tacked on 17 points and Kennedy Chappell chipped in as well with 10 points.
Lubbock Christian did a great job taking care of the basketball, dishing out 21 assists while turning the ball over seven times. Foster's six assists were the most for the Lady Chaps. Audrey Robertson also contributed with four assists of her own.
Lubbock Christian forced 14 Midwestern State turnovers while committing only seven themselves in Saturday's game. The Lady Chaps turned those takeaways into 16 points on the other end of the floor (16-6 scoring advantage in points-off-turnovers). Tia Johnson led the way individually with two steals.
The contest was Midwestern State's conference opener (1-5, 1-0). They were led in scoring by Zarria Carter (17 points) and also received 14 points from Kerbie Cash.
How It Happened
After falling behind 4-2, Lubbock Christian went on a 6-0 run with 8:32 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Chappell, to take an 8-4 lead. The Lady Chaps received nine points in the quarter from Maddox, leading to a 26-17 advantage heading into the second quarter (LCU closed the quarter on a 12-3 run). Lubbock Christian capitalized on seven Midwestern State turnovers in the opening period, turning them into nine points on the other end of the floor.
Lubbock Christian went a 7-0 run starting at the 6:19 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Foster, to increase its lead to 37-23. Lubbock Christian dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 19 points close to the basket and they took a 45-33 lead into the halftime break. Maddox (13 points) and Foster (10 points) led LCU at the break.
The Lady Chaps had a 7-0 run early in the second half, punctuated by a basket from Foster, to expand its lead to 54-35 with 7:29 to go in the third quarter. LCU, scoring 12 of its 23 points in the paint in the quarter, produced an 8-1 run (eight points split between Maddox and Johnson) to take their largest lead of the quarter (62-40 with 2:31 remaining in the frame). Foster led LCU with seven points in the quarter and helped them take a 68-48 lead into the final quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, LCU went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Audrey Spurgin's layup, to grow the lead to 78-52 with 7:44 to go in the contest. It was part of an 11-1 run to give LCU their largest lead (82-53) with 4:14 remaining. The Lady Chaps relied on their bench much of the quarter, as 12 different Lady Chaps appeared on the floor in the period.

» The Lady Chaps shot 51.7% in the game, posting identical 15-of-29 (51.7%) shooting marks in each half. The 51.7% shooting is the second time this season LCU has shot at least 50% in a game this season.
» From 6:19 in the second quarter to 4:11 in the third quarter (a span of 12:08), LCU shot an impressive 77.3% (17-of-22) from the field, without missing consecutive shot attempts during that stretch.
» The Lady Chaps put on a passing clinic, recording an assist on 70 percent of made field goals (21 assists on 30 field goals). The 21 assists is a season high.
» The Lubbock Christian defense forced 14 turnovers, while committing seven, which led to a 16-6 scoring advantage in points-off-turnovers. LCU has combined for 14 turnovers over their last two games (seven against St. Edward's Thursday), which is the fewest in a two-game span since January 2022 (14).
» LCU was a solid 21-of-24 (87.5%) from the free-throw line (Maci Maddox was 5-of-5). The mark places LCU with an 84.7% (72/85) free-throw shooting percentage on their home floor this season.
» Grace Foster led the Lady Chaps with a game-high 22 points. She has led LCU in all seven games this season and she has posted at least 20 points in six of LCU's seven contests.
» LCU improved to 3-0 at home on the season.
» The Lady Chaps have now won nine consecutive meetings against MSU and improve to 11-7 all-time against the Mustangs in Lubbock. MSU leads the all-time series 21-16.
