Dominate Second Half Leads Chaps Passed Mustangs

LUBBOCK, Texas -Tiras Morton scored 22 points and Najeeb Muhammad added 20 as the Lubbock Christian University men's basketball team knocked off the Western New Mexico Mustangs 88-53 at home Thursday night.

The Chaparrals (19-6, 14-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Morton, who notched a double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Muhammad added 20 points and five assists and Aaron Gonzales helped out with 17 points and three blocks.

The LCU offense made hay from downtown, pouring in 11 threes on 26 attempts. Gonzales hit five treys for the Chaps in the contest.

LCU did a great job disrupting Western New Mexico shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Gonzales' three rejections led the way individually for the Chaps.

How It Happened

LCU started out the scoring by going on a 10-0 run, culminating in a three from Ethan Duncan, to take an early lead with 16:48 left in the first half. The Chaps then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 37-30 advantage. LCU relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 37 points.

The Chaps kept its lead intact before going on a 14-0 run, finished off by Morton's jumper, to grow the lead to 51-32 with 15:22 to go in the contest. The Chaps kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 88-53 win. Lubbock Christian took care of business in the paint, recording 26 of its 51 points in the lane.

Game Notes

  • The Chaparrals held the Mustangs to only 27.9 percent shooting from the field.
  • Lubbock Christian tallied 21 total assists in the game.
  • The Chaps had a 48-30 edge on the boards in the win.
  • LCU outscored Western New Mexico 51-23 in the second half. 
  • The Chaps dominated in the paint scoring 42 points in the lane. 
  • The LCU defense held WNMU to 25 percent shooting in the second half.
