Morton and Duncan Lead the Chaps Past St. Mary's 86-70

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Tiras Morton collected 24 points and Ethan Duncan added 23 as the Lubbock Christian University Men's Basketball team took down St. Mary's 86-70 on the road Saturday.

Morton and Duncan's stellar scoring performances led the Chaparrals (20-8, 15-5) in the contest. Morton tacked on four steals and three blocks and Duncan added six rebounds and four assists. Najeeb Muhammad also helped out with 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

LCU shared the ball well in Saturday's game, racking up 16 assists on 30 made field goals. Duncan's four assists led the Chaps and Ty Caswell also added three assists of his own.

The Chaps did a great job disrupting St. Mary's shots in the contest, coming away with seven blocks. Morton's three rejections led the way individually for the Chaps.

How It Happened

LCU started out the scoring by going on a 7-0 run to take an early lead with 18:19 left in the first half. The Chaps continued to widen their lead entering halftime with a 43-29 advantage. LCU relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 43 points.

The Chaps kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 70-56 with 6:19 to go in the contest. LCU kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 86-70 win. The Chaps took care of business in the paint, recording 22 of its 43 points in the lane.

Game Notes

  • The Chaps shot well from three point range, knocking down nine of 19 long range attempts.
  • LCU never trailed on the way to an 86-70 victory.
  • The Chap defense suffocated the Rattlers, recording 16 turnovers which led to 24 points on the offensive end. 
  • LCU got a team-high eight rebounds from Kurt Wegscheider.
  • The Chap offense was very efficient in the win, going 30-of-54 (55.6 percent) from the field.
  • The win brings the Chap's record to 20-8, the fourth time they have won 20 games in a season in the Coach Duncan era. 
  • St. Mary's was led by Franklin Agu who racked up 15 points and nine rebounds. Tyler Caron added 13 points and three boards for the Rattlers.

The Chaps welcome No. 1 West Texas A&M to town Thursday night to renew the rivalry on the range. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside the Rip Griffin Center.
