Morton's Career-High 35 Not Enough as Chaps Fall to West Texas A&M 96-91

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lubbock Christian University men's basketball team dropped its final home game of the season, losing a back-and-fourth contest to West Texas A&M 96-91 Thursday night. 

The Chaparrals (20-9, 15-6) had four players score in double figures, led by Tiras Morton, who had a career-high 35 points and six rebounds. Ethan Duncan added 18 points and three steals and Najeeb Muhammad helped out with 15 points.

Both team's offenses were firing on all cylinders in a game that saw 13 lead changes and 12 tied scores. The Chaps shot an efficient 36-of-66 (54.5 percent) from the field in the loss.

How It Happened

After falling behind 21-10, LCU went on a 15-0 run with 11:12 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Kurt Wegscheider, to take a 25-21 lead. The Chaps and Buffs continued to trade buckets but LCU maintained the lead and entered halftime with a 41-37 advantage. LCU did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 22 of its 41 points close to the basket.

After intermission, West Texas A&M proceeded to take a 64-61 lead before LCU went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Wegscheider's layup, to seize a 69-64 lead with 8:53 to go in the contest. West Texas A&M re-asserted control, outscoring the Chaps 32-22 the rest of the way to hand LCU the 96-91 loss. 

Game Notes

  • Tiras Morton's 35 points is the most points scored by a Chap this season. Morton went 13-of-16 from the field in the game and also led LCU in rebounds with six. 
  • Most of LCU's points came down low as they scored 54 of their 91 points in the paint. 
  • The Chaps struggled from three point range in the second half going 2-of-10 from deep in the final 20 minutes. 
  • The LCU bench outscored WT's reserves 16 to six. Kurt Wegscheider lead the bench unit with 10 points and four rebounds. 
  • The Chap defense forced 10 turnovers in the loss, LCU scored 10 points off Buff miscues. 
  • WT was lead by Larry Wise who scored 39 points on 13-of-21 shooting. Ryland Holt (20) and Kieran Elliott (19) also scored in double figures for the Buffs. 
  • LCU wraps up their home schedule with an 11-4 record. 

Up Next

The Chaps will look for revenge as they travel to Canyon for a rematch with West Texas A&M on Saturday (Mar. 2). Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m. inside First United Bank Center.
