Lady Chaps Unable To Warm Up Offensively.... Fall in Alamo City

After Consecutive Games Shooting Over 50%, LCU Shoots 30% From Field

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 24, 2024) – Lubbock Christian University attempted to rally from a 10-point deficit to St. Mary's Saturday, but Grace Foster, who led LCU with 14 points, was unable to connect on a three-pointer before the buzzer and the Lady Chaparrals fell 49-47 at Bill Greehey Arena.
 
The Lady Chaps (19-8, 14-6) had two players score in double figures, led by Foster, who had 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Maci Maddox tacked on 13 points and four assists and Audrey Robertson added four points and two steals.

Reese Schumann pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Lubbock Christian, grabbing 16 boards and turning them into eight second chance points.
 
StMU (5-21, 5-15) received 16 points each from Stina Svilberg. She posted 10 rebounds as well to join teammate Taylor Haggan (11 points, 10 rebounds), as both had double-double performances.
 
How it Happened
 
Lubbock Christian struggled out of the gate, falling behind 14-8 at the end of the first quarter. They trailed as much as 12-2 in the quarter, shooting a woeful 3-of-15 (20%) in the quarter.
 
Saint Mary's added to that lead, building an 18-10 advantage before Lubbock Christian went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from MacI Maddox, to narrow its deficit to 18-15. Maddox finished with five points in the quarter and led the Lady Chaps in the half with nine points, as the Lady Chaps trailed 27-22 at the break.
 
Lubbock Christian received scoring from six different players in the third quarter, but no player had more than two points. Lubbock Christian played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 12 points in the paint in the quarter and they cut their deficit to 36-34 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
The Lady Chaps took a 37-36 lead on a Foster three-pointer in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. They had the lead on three occasions, never leading by more than a point. LCU trailed the final four minutes of the game, shooting 0-of-4 from the field and 0-of-2 from the free-throw line on shot attempts taken as the game was a one-possession game.
 
Game Notes
 
» The Lubbock Christian defense forced 16 turnovers. It marked the fifth consecutive game LCU forced their opponent to turn the ball over at least 15 times.

» Lubbock Christian cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 16 offensive boards in the game. It was a season high total and their highest since grabbing 16 offensive rebounds on Feb. 12, 2022.

» Grace Foster led the Lady Chaps with 14 points. She matched a career high with nine three-point attempts (made two).

» Lubbock Christian got eight rebounds from both Reese Schumann and Kennedy Chappell (one away a career high).

» LCU fell to 8-4 on the road and 4-4 against East Division programs.
 
» LCU dropped to 0-8 when trailing after three quarters and 5-5 when trailing at the half.

» The Lady Chaps were making their first trip to San Antonio since Jan. 12, 2019 and the loss places them with a 5-3 record in the Alamo City against StMU all-time. LCU had their 12-game win streak snapped in the series and StMU claims their first win since Dec. 31, 2016. LCU leads the series 21-4.
 
What's Next
The Lady Chaps have two games remaining in the regular season and both are West Division games against West Texas A&M. The home-and-home series begins in Lubbock Thursday at Rip Griffin Center with a 5:30 p.m. tip.
