AUSTIN, Texas (March 17, 2024) – Lubbock Christian University claimed their Lone Star Conference series at St. Edward's, winning the opening game of a doubleheader 3-0 behind a combined shutout by
Teoni Lamb and
Maxine Valdez. The Lady Chaparrals were unable to complete the sweep, as the Hilltoppers used a three-run fifth inning to stamp a 3-2 win over the Lady Chaps.
GAME 1 | Lubbock Christian 3, Saint Edward's 0
Teoni Lamb and
Maxine Valdez combined to toss a shutout, as Lubbock Christian blanked the Hilltoppers 3-0.
Lamb (6-2) started and picked up the win for Lubbock Christian, going 6.1 shutout innings while giving up four hits, walking one, and striking out six. Valdez pitched to two batters to clinch the save.
Ally Oyanguren led the way offensively for the Chaparrals, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and an RBI.
Kamryn Gibbs compiled a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI.
Baylea Myers also helped out, going 1-for-3 for Lubbock Christian with a double and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lady Chaps took advantage of the even numbered innings, scoring a run in the second, fourth and sixth innings. Oyanguren started the scoring in the second inning with a solo home run off Kylen Padgett. Myers hit a double in the fourth inning to score Oyanguren, and the run in the sixth inning was a solo home run off the bat of Gibbs.
The Hilltoppers put two runners aboard with one out in the seventh inning, but Valdez came in and retired the two batters she faced, as SEU could not do anything with the tying run at the plate.
GAME NOTES
» Lamb and Valdez combined to throw a four-hit shutout. Lamb has been involved in four shutouts this season (first combined) and Valdez has been a part of two (first combined). The shutout was LCU's sixth shutout win of the season. Valdez, who has been a part of 15 career shutouts (fourth combined), also produced her first save of the season and sixth of her LCU career.
» Lamb struck out six Hilltoppers hitters and walked one.
» The Chaparrals out-hit the Hilltoppers at a 7-4 clip.

Four Lubbock Christian players recorded multi-hit games, but the Lady Chaps fell to St. Edward's 3-2 in the second game at Diane Daniels Field.
Taryn Westbrook (3-3) got the ball to start for Lubbock Christian (16-12, 15-9) and took the loss.
Sydnee Bowlin led the Lady Chaps at the plate, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame.
Riley Flores furnished a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. LCU had an 11-6 advantage in hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
LCU got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning, as
Hope Banales singled in Bowlin. Lubbock Christian scored twice in the frame, with one run coming across on Flores' single. The Lady Chaps were unable to hold the lead, as St. Edward's scored three times in the fifth inning to grab the 3-2 win. Lauren Hoyt started the scoring for SEU with a solo home run before they scored an additional two runs off three hits and one LCU error.

The 26-game hit streak was the longest by a Lady Chaps member since McKenzie Clemmons had a 32-game hit streak in 2012. LCU's active hit streak leader is now Oyanguren, who has hits in her last seven games and has reached base safely in 26 consecutive games.
