LUBBOCK, Texas - It was an offensive explosion Thursday night as No. 18 Lubbock Christian defeated Texas A&M International 18-8 at Hays Field.
Senior Aydan Alger started on the bump and got the win for LCU. The left-hander went 4.2 innings, giving up eight runs, all earned, walking four, and striking out two.
Junior Shea Bowen collected four hits at the dish, including a triple and an RBI to lead the Chaparrals. Junior Brevin McCool furnished a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, two walks and four RBI. Sophomore Jacob Gutierrez also contributed for LCU, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding a home run, a walk and three RBI.
Including Gutierrez, Hayden Blair, Nate Van Maanen, and Johnny Gomez III all hit dingers to propel the LCU offense.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chaps were trailing 1-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. LCU scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run triple from McCool.
The Dustdevils failed to push any runs across before the Chaps built on their lead in the third inning. LCU brought home a pair, with one run driven in by senior Ryan Ball's single, which brought the Chaps lead to 5-1.
LCU's lead had disappeared once the fourth inning arrived and turned into a 7-5 Texas A&M International advantage, when the Chaps re-gained control at 9-7. The Chaps bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a one-run single off the bat of Ball.
The Dustdevils gained ground, closing the gap to 9-8 until LCU added some insurance in the fifth. The Chaps left the yard two times in the inning on the way to scoring eight runs, bringing the LCU advantage to 17-8.
The Chaparrals kept Texas A&M International off the scoreboard before expanding their lead to 18-8 the following inning. LCU picked up a run on Gutierrez's leadoff home run off of freshman Mark Chapa. The score remained 18-8 for the rest of the game, as the Chaps coasted to the win.
