FRISCO, Texas - Ethan Duncan knocked down a 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining to put the Lubbock Christian University Men's Basketball team ahead for good in a 50-48 victory against Texas A&M International at Comerica Center Saturday. With the win the Chaps advance to the Lone Star Conference Tournament championship game for the first time in program history.
The Chaparrals (23-9) had three players score in double figures, led by Kurt Wegscheider, who had 13 points, six rebounds and two steals. Duncan tacked on 12 points and two steals and Tiras Morton helped out with a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Lubbock Christian's defense held Texas A&M International to only 33.3 percent shooting from the field, including 22.2 percent from beyond the arc in the win.
How It Happened
Lubbock Christian struggled out of the gate, falling behind 26-14 heading into halftime. LCU's 14 points is their lowest scoring half this season. The Chaps went just 4-of-21 from the field in the first 20 minutes.
Lubbock Christian narrowed its deficit to 46-40 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Duncan's jumper, to seize a 47-46 lead with 1:06 to go in the contest. TAMIU answered with a Jaylen Thompson three pointer to regain the lead with 38 seconds to go. Duncan answered right back for LCU, hitting the game winner from the Comerica Center logo. Lubbock Christian shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting five shots from deep to score 15 of its 36 points.
Game Notes
- Tiras Morton notched a double-double for the Chaparrals with 10 points and 11 rebounds, his 11th double-double of the season.
- The LCU defense forced 11 turnovers in the win leading to 10 points on the offensive end.
- After shooting 4-of-21 (19.05 percent) in the first half, LCU turned it around after intermission going 12-of-24 (50 percent) in the final 20 minutes of play.
- The Chaps went 5-of-9 (55.56 percent) from three in the second half.
- LCU was outrebounded 34 to 30 in the win.
- The Dustdevils were lead by John Achebe who scored 17 points and added six rebounds.
