LCU Rallies Late for 9-7 Victory Over St. Edward's

LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 10 Lubbock Christian Chaparrals broke through after a 7-7 tie in the seventh inning to take down the St. Edward's Hilltoppers 9-7 Friday night at Hays Field.

Senior Logan Ellis (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for LCU (28-11). The right-hander went 1.2 shutout innings without giving up a hit, allowing no walks and striking out two. Senior Chris Shull picked up the save for Chaps, throwing one shutout inning while allowing no hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.

At the plate, LCU was led by junior Brevin McCool who went 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Nate Van Maanen also made a huge impact at the dish, hitting his seventh homer of the season and driving in a pair of runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Chaps were trailing 2-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. LCU scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run homer from senior Nate Van Maanen.

The Hilltoppers failed to push any runs across before the Chap offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Junior Frayner Chaves' run-scoring single highlighted an inning where LCU scored twice, which brought the Chaps lead to 5-2.

St. Edward's fired back to even the ballgame at five before LCU reclaimed a 7-5 advantage in the sixth inning. The Chaps recorded two runs when a single from McCool brought home Carson Ogilvie and Shea Bowen.

The Hilltoppers then evened up the game at seven before LCU came back to retake their advantage in the eighth inning. The Chaps scored twice, with one run coming across on McCool's single, bringing the score to 9-7 in favor of LCU. Shull took the mound in the top of the ninth and slammed the door, securing the 9-7 win.
