Chaps Win Final Three Singles To Beat Cameron

LCU Trailed 3-1 Before Rallying For 4-3 Win

LAWTON, Okla. (April 19, 2024) – No.45 Lubbock Christian University needed an upset win in No.1-singles as the clincher, and Martins Abamu delivered, as the Chaparrals edged Cameron 4-3 in Lone Star Conference duals play Friday at Streich-Henry Tennis Complex.

LCU trailed 3-1 in the dual and needed to rally, as the Aggies were a match away from clinching. The Chaps stormed back, and it started in No.6-singles, as Pablo Segura won in straight sets for LCU's first singles win of the dual. No.3-singles and No.1-singles were the only remaining matches and each went to a decisive third set. Mattia Ghedin won the first set 7-5, but dropped the second set by the same score. In the third set, Ghedin claimed the match with a 6-2 set win to help LCU tie the dual 3-3.

The No.1-singles match pitted No.44 Louis Boilevin against LCU's No.49 Martins Abamu. Each of the first two sets needed a tiebreaker. Abamu won the opening set tiebreaker 7-5 to win the set 7-6, but Boilevin put the match even with a 7-3 tiebreaking win to win set-two 7-6. Abamu bounced back in the third set and won the set 6-2 to ignite a road celebration.

The doubles point, to push LCU into singles play with a 1-0 dual lead, proved vital. Herman Aguirre / Pablo Segura gave LCU a 1-0 lead by winning No.3-doubles, but the doubles point came down to the No.2-doubles match. It was Mattia Ghedin / Blas Ruiz Romero surviving 7-5 to win the match for the doubles clincher.

Segura won his team-leading 23rd singles win this season (eighth consecutive win) and is 23-5 in all singles matches played. He is 16-2 in duals and 6-0 in No.6-singles matches. Ghedin's win marked his seventh consecutive win and 18th of the season (18-8). Abamu improved to 19-11 in singles on the season. The doubles team of Aguirre / Segura won their team-leading 17th doubles match of the season (17-5). They are 12-4 in duals and 10-4 in No.3-doubles on the season. Ghedin / Ruiz Romero improved to 5-1 in duals.

The Chaps record improves to 16-5 on the season and they are 4-3 in the LSC. They make a quick trip to Fort Smith, Ark. Saturday for their regular season finale against Arkansas Fort Smith. It was moved to indoors at Fort Smith Athletic Club for a 9 a.m. start.
