Chaps Rally Late to Secure Series Split with West Texas A&M

CANYON, Texas - The Lubbock Christian Chaparrals rallied from a 4-4 tie in the eighth inning to win in breathtaking fashion, earning a 5-4 victory over West Texas A&M on the road Sunday.

Senior Chris Shull (4-1) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for LCU. The right-hander went 6.1 shutout innings while giving up three hits, allowing three walks and striking out seven.

Offensively, the Chaps were led by junior Frayner Chavez, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a double and two RBI. Junior Brevin McCool furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Senior Ryan Ball also contributed for LCU, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Chaps got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. LCU managed to push across two runs in the inning.

The Chaps lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the seventh trailing 4-2. LCU picked up two runs in the frame, the big hit being an RBI double from Chavez, which brought the score level at 4-4.

That 4-4 tie turned into a 5-4 LCU lead in the ninth inning when Chavez drove in McCool on a fly out. Shull retired the Buffs in the ninth to secure the victory for LCU.
