Gutierrez Collects 4 Hits in LCU's 15-9 Win Over Eastern New Mexico

LUBBOCK, Texas - After being sidelined for about a month, Sophomore Jacob Gutierrez returned to the lineup and collected four hits to help lead the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals past the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds 15-9 on Friday at Hays Field. 

Junior Ryan Markwardt (9-1) started on the mound and picked up the win for Lubbock Christian (33-14). The left-hander went five innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on eight hits, allowing three walks and striking out six. Senior Chris Shull also made an impact on the mound for the Chaps, throwing two innings, giving up one run on two hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.

In addition to his four hits, Gutierrez had a triple, a home run and three RBI to lead the Chaps. Junior Brevin McCool put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 3-for-6 with two doubles, a home run and six RBI. Junior Frayner Chaves also contributed for LCU, putting together three hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double, a triple and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Chaps got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with three runs in the top of the first inning. The big hit in the inning was a two RBI triple off the bat of Gutierrez. 

Leading 4-2 in the fourth inning, LCU added two more runs when McCool doubled down the left field line to bring in Shea Bowen and Hayden Blair

The Greyhounds answered with two runs of their own making the score 6-4 in favor of the Chaps. LCU extended the lead in the fifth inning as Frayner Chavez hit an RBI double. Later in the fifth, Chavez came around to score on a ground out. 

The Chaps took a narrow 9-8 lead into the eighth inning before the offense exploded for six runs. Gutierrez got the inning started with a solo home run to right field. Later in the inning, Ogilvie picked up an RBI double to score Chavez. Brevin McCool provided the exclamation point on the inning with a towering grand slam to left.

The Greyhounds added a run in the ninth, but the Chaps coasted to a 15-9 victory. 

GAME NOTES

  • The Chaps had three players put together games with multiple extra-base hits.
  • Every LCU starter reached base safely in the win.
  • The LCU pitching staff combined to strike out 12 Eastern New Mexico hitters.
  • The Chaps out-hit the Greyhounds at a 15-13 clip.
  • LCU went 6-for-18 (.333) with runners in scoring position.
  • LCU pitchers faced 47 Eastern New Mexico hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and six fly balls while striking out 12.
  • Eastern New Mexico was led offensively by junior Daniel Pruitt, who went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.

The Chaps and Greyhounds square off in a double header tomorrow afternoon. First pitch of the day is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. from Hays Field.
