LCU Claims 4-3 Win Over Cameron For First LSC Championships Victory

ARLINGTON, Texas (April 25, 2024) – In less than a week following a 4-3 win in Lawton, Okla. over Cameron, No.40 Lubbock Christian University (No.4-seed) needed a third-set rally in the final singles match to claim a 4-3 win in the Quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Championships over No.5-seed Cameron for LCU's first LSC Championships win in program history. LCU, who lost to Cameron last season in their only other prior LSC Championship appearance, advance to the Semifinals at Arlington Tennis Center to face No.1-seed No.19 Midwestern State (scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday).

LCU put an early halt to doubles play winning the first two completed doubles matches for the doubles point. Martins Abamu / Tristan Vigneron grabbed their second win of the season over a nationally ranked opponent, as they topped No.38 Martin Hlavacek / Alexander Post 6-2 in No.1-doubles. Blas Ruiz Romero / Mattia Ghedin improved to 6-1 in duals on the season, winning No.3-doubles. (they are 3-0 this season in No.3-doubles). The pair of wins sent LCU into singles play with a 1-0 duals lead.

The Chaps had a 3-1 lead in the duals after Pablo Segura (No.5-singles) and Blas Ruiz Romero (No.6-singles) claimed straight-set victories. The Aggies stormed back winning No.1-singles and No.4-singles matches to tie the dual at 3-3, which directed the focus toward the decisive No.3-singles match involving LCU's Ghedin. Needing to win the second set, Ghedin rallied from a 3-0 and 5-3 deficit. Trailing 6-5, he fought off three match-points and rallied to tie the set at 6-6, which forced a tiebreaker. Ghedin won the tiebreaker 7-4 to advance the Chaps into the Semifinals.

Segura won his team-leading 25th singles win this season (10th consecutive win) and is 25-5 in all singles matches played. He is 18-2 in duals and 7-0 in No.5-singles matches. Ghedin claimed his eighth consecutive singles win and is 19-8 on the season (all since LSC duals play began). He is 8-3 when playing in No.3-singles.

The Chaps record improves to 18-5 on the season and the win placed them 1-1 all-time in LSC Championship play. LCU is 4-3 in matches with 4-3 outcomes.  The Chaps improve to 2-2 all-time against Cameron (2-0 this season). LCU and Midwestern State are slated for a 1 p.m. start Friday, but inclement weather could delay the start.
