LCU Drops Opening Game of NCAA Super Regional 7-6 in 10 Innings

LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 4 Lubbock Christian Chaparrals fell 7-6 in a 10-inning matchup with No. 17 Angelo State in the opening game of the NCAA South Central Super Regional Friday night.

Senior Chris Shull (5-2) came out of the bullpen for LCU (44-15) and took the loss. The right-hander went four innings, giving up one run on one hit, allowing two walks and striking out seven. Senior Logan Ellis was a bright spot for the Chaps, coming out of the bullpen and throwing one shutout inning, allowing one hit, with no walks and one strikeout.

LCU was led at the plate by junior Brevin McCool who went 3-for-5 with a triple and a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Chaps got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Senior Carson Ogilvie came across to score the lone run of the inning for LCU.

The Rams failed to push any runs across before the Chaps built on their lead in the third inning. LCU scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer off the bat of senior Nate Van Maanen, scoring McCool and senior Jarred Gibson, which brought the Chaps lead to 4-0.

LCU's lead had evaporated by the time the sixth inning came around, turning into a 6-4 Angelo State advantage. The Chaps evened up the game at six when senior Ryan Ball's run-scoring single highlighted a two-run output in the frame for the Chaps.

The game remained scoreless until Angelo State took a 7-6 lead in the top of the 10th when Conagher Sands scored from first base on a Chap miscue that resulted in two errors. The Chaps went down in order in the bottom of the frame, dropping game one of the three-game series 7-6.
