LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Ryan Ball and junior Brevin McCool each hit two home runs to help lead the No. 6 Lubbock Christian Chaparrals past the St. Edward's Hilltoppers 14-8 in the first game of the Lone Star Conference opening series Friday night.
Junior Ryan Markwardt (10-1) got the win for LCU (37-14). The southpaw went 5.1 innings, giving up eight runs, six earned, on 12 hits, allowing three walks and striking out four. Sophomore Coleson Abel also pitched well out of the bullpen, going three shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking one and striking out five.
McCool added a walk and six RBI to his two homer day and Ball supplemented his own two big flies with two RBI for the Chaps. Senior Jarred Gibson also chipped in at the dish, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a triple, a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 4-0, the Chaps first put runs on the board in the second inning. McCool came across to score the lone run of the inning to get LCU on the board.
The Hilltoppers expanded their lead to 6-1 before the Chaparrals offense got back to work, taking the lead in the fourth. LCU hit two home runs in the inning on the way to pushing eight runs across, which brought the Chaps lead to 9-6.
St. Edward's narrowed LCU's lead to 9-8 before the Chaps stretched the advantage to 10-8 in the sixth inning. The Chaps picked up a run on Ball's leadoff home run.
LCU held the Hilltoppers scoreless before their offense got back in action the next inning. The Chaps scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of McCool, bringing the LCU advantage to 14-8. The score remained 14-8 for the rest of the game, as the Chaps coasted to the win.
