Chaps Fry Nighthawks in Idaho

Pettigrew’s clutch PK save and first goals from Martinez and Horta lead LCU to a 2-1 win

NAMPA, Idaho (September 21, 2024) – Lubbock Christian University completed a sweep of games in Idaho Saturday, as a pair of goals in the first half was enough to lead the Chaparrals past host Northwest Nazarene for LCU's first true road win of the season.

How it Happened
Lubbock Christian started the scoring when Justin Martinez scored his first goal of the season in the eighth minute. The Chaparrals tacked on another score on a goal from Francisco Horta -- his first goal of the season -- in the 19th minute.

A key moment occurred in the 33rd minute, as the Nighthawks were awarded a penalty shot for an opportunity to cut into the deficit. NNU's Johnny Ramirez attempted the penalty kick and tried to go left-side, but sprawling to his right and making the save was LCU's Connor Pettigrew to keep the game scoreless in the first half.

Northwest Nazarene got on the board to make it a 2-1 game on Ousman Garba's 47th-minute goal, assisted by Jonathan Cardona. The 2-1 score held to the end of the game, as Pettigrew made a trio of saves in the half and received quality defense, which prevented a tying goal on a shot past Pettigrew. Alejo Garcia was at the right place at the right time for LCU, as he denied the equalizer.
