ALPINE, Texas (November 5, 2025) — Lubbock Christian University and Sul Ross State University battled to a scoreless draw on Wednesday at Lobo Field to close out the 2025 regular season.
LCU will now wait on the results of the St. Edward's match against West Texas A&M to find out their seeding for the Lone Star Conference Tournament. If the Hilltoppers win, the Chaps will be the No. 3 seed in the tournament and host a game on Saturday. If WT wins or the two teams draw, LCU will finish as the No. 2 seed and receive a first round bye, not playing until next Wednesday, when they would host game.
The Chaparrals' goalkeeper made five saves to secure the clean sheet, with three critical stops in the second half. Both teams had opportunities, but neither could break through, as the Chaps registered three shots on goal out of eight attempts, while Sul Ross State managed five shots on goal from 17 attempts. Each team received two yellow cards in a tightly contested matchup.
Lubbock Christian ends the regular season with a record of 6-7-4 overall and 5-3-3 in conference play. Sul Ross State finishes 5-5-7 overall with a 3-3-5 record in the conference.
The first half began with the Chaps asserting early pressure through multiple corner kicks, starting as early as the 5th minute. Horta's shot on goal in the 9th minute was saved, and Militao attempted another shot shortly after that was blocked Pettigrew made key saves for the Chaps, maintaining a scoreless match.
Despite Lubbock Christian's offensive efforts, including a saved shot by
Hugo Staunton in the 33rd minute, the half remained even.
The second half commenced with the Chaps looking to seize control. Despite an early offside call against the them, the visiting team maintained pressure and managed several shots, including attempts by Nunez and
Geoffroy Letienne. However, both efforts were either saved or missed the target.
Pettigrew made crucial saves to deny Sul Ross State's advances, notably stopping attempts from Joshua Hernandez-Gutierrez and Jaime Martinez. The Chaparrals faced multiple offside calls throughout the half, which slowed their offensive momentum.
As the half wound down, the defensive efforts from both sides ensured the scoreboard remained unchanged. The match concluded with a 0-0 scoreline, as neither team managed to find a breakthrough in the second half.
GAME NOTES:
- Lubbock Christian earned its sixth shutout of the season surpassing their total from the 2024 season. The last time an LCU team had more than five shutouts in a season was 2023, when they had seven.
- This is the third 0-0 tie of the season for the Chaparrals, who also had scoreless draws against Newman on Sept. 20 and against St. Mary's on Oct. 1.
- Pettigrew's five saves were one short of matching his season-high of six, which he has done twice this season.
- The Chaps' eight shots broke a four-game streak with double-digit shots recorded in the game.
- Sul Ross State out-shot the Chaps 17-8, making LCU 1-5-2 on the year when opponents have more shots than them.
