McCool Homers Twice, Falls Triple Short of Cycle

LUBBOCK, Texas (February 7, 2025) – Brevin McCool homered twice and every Chaparral starter had at least one hit as Lubbock Christian beat Sul Ross State 15-7 in Friday's series-opener.

Senior Lex Garcia (1-0) started on the mound and picked up the win for Lubbock Christian (1-4, 1-4). The right-hander went 4.1 innings, giving up five runs, all of them earned, on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out four.

Kyler Carpenter, Logan Moore and Andrew Duran were all used in relief of Garcia. Moore threw 1.1 scoreless innings while allowing no hits, with no walks and striking out two.

McCool went 4-for-6 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with a double while driving in six runs. The New Mexico native now has four homers on the year and is slugging a whopping 1.125.

Shortstop Kade York added a home run of his own, and third basemen Nico Baumbach went 3-for-6 with two RBI. Baumbach and McCool are tied for the team lead in average at .458.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chaparrals got on the board almost immediately, putting their two through four batters all on base before getting a two-run single off the bat of McCool. Baumbach added an RBI with a sacrifice fly, putting LCU up 3-0 before Garcia ever took the mound.

Garcia kept the Lobos off the board for the first three frames, but they got a run in the bottom of the fourth. Lubbock Christian immediately got the run back and more in the fifth, as McCool hit his first home run and Johnny Gomez III drove in a run with a double.

Sul Ross State narrowed Lubbock Christian's lead to 6-5 in the bottom of the frame with a. pair of homers, before the Chaparrals stretched the advantage to 13-5 in the sixth inning. York's homer came in that frame, along with RBI from Baumbach and McCool.

LCU's final two runs came in the seventh, when McCool hit his second homer. SRSU got two in the bottom of the frame to avoid the run-rule. Moore pitched a scoreless eighth and Duran closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
