How the West Was Won: Chaps Wrangle Mustang in Regular Season Finale

LCU Shoots 50 Percent in Senior Day Victory

LUBBOCK, Texas (March 1, 2025) -  Lubbock Christian shot 50 percent from three-point range on the way to a 74-57 victory over Midwestern State on Saturday inside the Rip Griffin Center.

With the win, the Chaparrals (23-7, 18-4) claimed the Lone Star Conference West Division Championship, finishing a game above the Mustangs. LCU also clinched the No. 2 seed in next week's LSC postseason tournament. They will take on the No. 7 seed Eastern New Mexico at 2:30 p.m. on Friday at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas.

LCU had four players score in double figures, led by Ethan Duncan, who had 19 points. Ty Caswell added 13 points, six rebounds and two steals and Sean Murphy and Amondo Miller Jr. both chipped in with 11 points.

In a reversal of Thursday night's matchup between these same teams, Lubbock Christian out-rebounded Midwestern State 40-22, led by Amondo Miller Jr.'s eight boards.

Lubbock Christian also had a season-high seven blocked shots, including four from Miller. The last time LCU blocked at least seven shots in a game was Feb. 24, 2024 against St. Mary's.

How It Happened
After falling behind 7-6, Lubbock Christian went on a 10-0 run with 17:04 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Aaron Gonzales. The Chaparrals then added 10 points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 44-25 advantage.

The majority of LCU's three-point success came in the opening half when they shot 61.1 percent (11-18). Duncan did the majority of the damage, hitting on four of his five attempts, including a pair from NBA distance.

Lubbock Christian got the lead to its widest point early in the second half on a jumper from Duncan that put them ahead by 21. MSU fought back for a brief stretch and cut the deficit to 14 with 15:07 left to play, but Duncan stopped the run with a three-pointer.

MSU cut the deficit back to 15 with five minutes left on a dunk, buy it would be their final made field goal of the game. The Chaps held the Mustangs to just 33.3 percent shooting in the second half and only 38.8 percent shooting in the game. MSU shot only 30 percent from behind the arc in the game.
