Chaps Serve Up a Clincher in Rain-Soaked Showdown

Lubbock Christian Battles Through Rain Delays to Secure 4-0 Win

ARLINGTON, Texas (March 12, 2025) – No. 7 Lubbock Christian University men's tennis overcame scheduling disruptions and a weather delay to secure a 4-0 victory over previously unbeaten Southeastern Oklahoma State in a neutral-site matchup Sunday at UTA Tennis Center. Originally slated to be played in Plano, Texas, the match was relocated to Arlington and further delayed due to persistent rain in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

The Chaparrals (10-1) set the tone early by sweeping the doubles point. The No. 39-ranked duo of Mattia Ghedin and Marco Seccia controlled the No. 2 doubles court with a 6-1 victory over Benjamin Fracassi and Djordje Kurcubic, clinching the opening advantage. Moments later, Andres De Los Rios and Pablo Segura secured the sweep with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles against Luis Ching and Luke Tinnock. The No. 46-ranked pairing of Kelly Giese and Blas Ruiz Romero held a 4-1 lead at No. 1 doubles when play was halted after the doubles point was decided.

In singles action, Seccia delivered the first blow for LCU, dominating David Palomares 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 4 position to double the Chaps' lead. De Los Rios followed with a resilient effort at No. 5 singles, recovering from a second-set loss to defeat Kurcubic 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Segura, ranked No. 13 nationally, sealed the match for LCU with a hard-fought 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) victory over Ching at the top of the lineup. With the Chaps playing to clinch, the remaining three singles matches were left unfinished.

Giese (No. 25) and Ghedin (No. 52) were both locked in third-set battles at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, when the match was called. Giese had split sets with Fracassi (6-1, 4-6) and trailed 3-2 in the third, while Ghedin was in a tight 6-3, 2-6, 5-3 contest against Tinnock. Ruiz Romero held a 5-2 lead over German Vallejo at No. 6 singles before play was halted.

The victory marked LCU's seventh neutral site win of the season (7-1) and extended their winning streak to eight matches. Seccia and De Los Rios played pivotal roles in the win, each contributing victories in both doubles and singles play. Segura (18-3 this season and on a seven-match win streak) continued his strong form at No. 1 singles, while the pairing of Ghedin and Seccia (6-1 on the season) provided a dominant doubles performance.

LCU had to navigate a chaotic week of scheduling adjustments due to inclement weather in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The Chaps' March 11 match against Southern Arkansas was halted mid-match due to rain and will be replayed at a later date. Additionally, their scheduled contest against McKendree that same day was canceled.

Lubbock Christian will now turn its attention to its next scheduled matchup, as they travel to California to open a three-match West Coast swing in Irvine, Calif. against Concordia Irvine.
