'Pitt Stop' Needed After LCU Stuns No.1 TWU To Take Regional Crown

Lady Chaps Erase 11-Point Deficit With Three-Point Barrage To Punch Ticket to Pittsburgh

DENTON, Texas (March 17, 2025) – No. 10 Lubbock Christian University erased an 11-point second-half deficit with a blistering 15-3 run, fueled by five three-pointers, to claim a 62-54 victory over top-seeded No. 1 Texas Woman's in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional championship Monday night at Kitty Magee Arena. The No. 2-seeded Lady Chaps (32-4) secured their fifth South Central Regional title in program history, punching their ticket to the Elite Eight in Pittsburgh, Pa.

In a game featuring nine lead changes and six ties, Lubbock Christian overcame a slow start and took control late, outscoring Texas Woman's 26-16 in the final period—nearly matching their 36-point total from the first three quarters. Kennedy Chappell knocked down three three-pointers, including two during LCU's pivotal 15-3 run, and co-led the team with 15 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Grace Foster overcame a 1-of-8 first-half shooting struggle to post a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double. Maci Maddox (six assists) and Audrey Robertson (eight rebounds, two blocks) each added 10 points in key contributions for LCU.

Texas Woman's (33-2), who had their 27-game win streak snapped, was led by Ashley Ingram's 20 points and seven rebounds, but the Pioneers struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 1-of-12 from three-point range (8.3%). Scout Huffman contributed nine points and seven rebounds, but Texas Woman's was unable to hold onto its halftime advantage as LCU's defense locked in late.

How It Happened

The game opened with a defensive battle, as both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm. Texas Woman's led 8-7 after the first quarter, with Ashley Ingram scoring four points for the Pioneers. LCU shot just 2-of-15 from the field in the opening frame but stayed within striking distance thanks to a three-pointer from Maddox and a pair of free throws from Foster.

Texas Woman's built a 15-11 lead midway through the second quarter, but LCU answered with a key stretch from Chappell and Robertson. Chappell buried a three-pointer at 2:35 to put the Lady Chaps ahead 18-17, their first lead since the opening period. The Pioneers regained momentum in the final minutes, as Elliott scored six of her eight second-quarter points down the stretch. Jada Celsur capped the half with a buzzer-beating three-pointer, sending Texas Woman's into the locker room with a 26-19 advantage.

Lubbock Christian made its push late in the third quarter, trimming an 11-point deficit down to two with a flurry of three-pointers. Trailing 35-24 with just over three minutes left, Kennedy Chappell sparked the Lady Chaps with a three-pointer at 2:52. After a Texas Woman's bucket, Grace Foster answered with another triple at 2:14. Chappell struck again from deep at 1:32, and Audrey Robertson capped the run with a three-pointer at 0:53, pulling LCU within 38-36 heading into the final period.

LCU reclaimed the lead for good with 8:54 left in the game when Foster sank two free throws. The teams traded baskets until Lubbock Christian seized control with a decisive 9-0 run, capped by a floater from Foster that made it 53-46 with 1:46 remaining. Texas Woman's never recovered, as LCU sealed the game at the free-throw line, hitting 13-of-15 from the stripe in the final period.

Game Notes
» Grace Foster notched a double-double for the Lady Chaps with 15 points and 10 rebounds. It was the 12th time an LCU player has notched a double-double in a NCAA postseason game (ninth time in a regional) and it was Foster's second in a NCAA postseason game in her career (her first was in the South Central regional championship game in San Angelo, Texas against UT Tyler in 2023, as she posted 15 points and 11 rebounds).

» The Lady Chaps only led for 12:37 of the game, compared to trailing for 22:27. LCU improved to 6-3 when trailing after the first quarter, 7-3 when trailing at halftime and 4-2 when trailing after the third quarter.

» The Lady Chaps held the Pioneers to only 37.5 percent shooting from the field, which was a season low and their lowest since UT Tyler held them to 29.8% on Feb. 23, 2023.

» The Lady Chaps shared the ball well, recording an assist on 70 percent of made baskets. LCU had 14 assists, with 10 coming from Maddox (6) and Chappell (4, matching a career high).

» Lubbock Christian had a stellar day defensively, holding Texas Woman's to 8 percent from beyond the arc on 12 attempts, which marked the eighth time this season LCU has held an opponent to less than 17% shooting from three-point range. TWU was held to one three-pointer as well (on three attempts) in their overtime meeting against LCU in Frisco (LSC Championships).

» Lubbock Christian had a 38-34 edge on the boards in the win. It was only the third time this season in which TWU had been out-rebounded.

» All-Tournament Team selections included LCU's Kennedy Chappell, Grace Foster and Most Outstanding Player Maci Maddox. Chappell was 3-of-7 (42.9%) from three-point range in the tournament. Foster (19.7 points per game) and Maddox (14.7 points per game and 6-of-13 from three-point range) each claim their second All-Tournament Team accolades. An incredible feat, Foster spearheaded an LCU squad that was 83.8% as a team from the free-throw line with a personal effort of 23-of-23, which tops Allie Schulte's 14-of-14 from Laynee Burr's 10-of-10 - each from the 2020-21 season. Foster is now 59-of-61 (96.7%) from the free-throw line in NCAA postseason games.

» LCU improved to 2-3 in games played against nationally top-25 programs and all five games were against programs ranked in the top-10. Nov. 19, 2021 marked the last time LCU defeated a No.1 team, as they defeated No.1 Lander at home. The last time LCU defeated a No.1 nationally ranked team in an NCAA postseason game was March 27, 2019, they defeated top-ranked Drury in Columbus, Ohio.  The last time LCU played a No.1 on the road was Dec. 3, 2016 at Emporia State (lost 60-50). LCU record books do not indicate if LCU has ever-previously defeated a No.1 program on the road, but it is their first occurrence since making the move from NAIA to NCAA Div. II.

» The Lady Chaps improve to 11-1 this season in true road games. In their NCAA postseason history, LCU improves to 2-1 all-time in true road games. This marked their first-ever win on the road in a regional championship game. Their only prior NCAA postseason road win was in a split regional, as they defeated Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction, Colo. during the semifinals of the 2019 postseason.

» LCU, now 8-6 all-time against TWU, won their first game over TWU in Denton since Dec. 3, 2014. The Lady Chaps are 2-5 against the Pioneers over the last seven meetings and the two wins are in NCAA postseason play. LCU is 3-0 all-time in NCAA postseason play against TWU.

» The 2025 Elite Eight marks LCU's fifth all-time appearance into the NCAA Div. II's final-site event (2016, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2025) and it is their first-ever trip to Pittsburgh, as LCU has never played a game in Pennsylvania.

» LCU improved to 27-4 all-time in NCAA postseason play and 18-3 all-time in South Central Regionals.
