AUSTIN, Texas (March 7, 2025) – Lubbock Christian University and St. Edward's split a pair of shutouts in Friday's Lone Star Conference doubleheader at Diane Daniels Field. The Lady Chaps were held to just four hits on the day—two in each game—falling 3-0 in the opener before making the most of their limited offense in a 1-0 win in Game 2. Emily Dix and Kendall Ward combined for the shutout, snapping LCU's three-game skid.
Game 1
The Lubbock Christian Chaparrals were not able to score a run against Saint Edward's pitcher Kylen Padgett in the opener and were shut out 3-0 by the Hilltoppers.
Teoni Lamb (3-4) started and took the loss in the circle for Lubbock Christian (15-8, 6-7). She went six innings, giving up three runs, on six hits, allowing no walks and striking out five.
Offensively, the Chaparrals were led by Riley Flores, who went 1-for-1 in the game with two walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
St. Edward's took control early, plating the game's first run in the opening frame. With one out, Sofia Aponte roped a double to left and came around to score two batters later when Sloane Hill delivered an RBI single.
Lubbock Christian put runners aboard in the third when Flores drew a leadoff walk and Ashlinn Hamilton was hit by a pitch, but a failed bunt attempt and a strikeout ended the threat. St. Edward's added to its lead in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a leadoff infield single and a well-executed sacrifice bunt. With runners on second and third, a fielder's choice plated Megan Morris before Lauren Hoyt stole second, setting up an RBI groundout from Arianna Vidales to make it 3-0.
LCU's best chance to break through came in the fifth after a leadoff single from Flores, followed by another from Hamilton. A walk loaded the bases with no outs, but St. Edward's escaped the jam unscathed with a soft liner to first, a flyout to left, and a routine fly to right.
Despite solid work in the circle, limiting St. Edward's to six hits with no walks and five strikeouts, LCU could not solve Padgett, who went the distance, allowing just two singles while striking out four. LCU's last baserunner came in the seventh on a walk, but a fielder's choice and two flyouts sealed the shutout.
GAME NOTES
» The shutout was the first time LCU has been shutout this season.
» Flores (1-for-1) and Hamilton (1-for-2) had the only hits for LCU.
» Saint Edward's was led offensively by Sofia Aponte, who went 1-for-3 with a double, and Jerzie Pelham, who was 2-for-3.
» Yaya Kaaialii had her streak of reaching base safely end at 20 games. It is the longest by a Lady Chaps member this season.
Game 2
A seventh-inning RBI-single by Hamilton proved to be the difference, as Lubbock Christian eked out a 1-0 victory over St. Edward's in a tightly contested second game of the doubleheader.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams received stellar pitching performances, with LCU's Emily Dix and SEU's Lisette Urquidez trading zeroes through six innings. Urquidez was nearly flawless for St. Edward's, allowing just two hits while striking out one in a complete-game effort. Dix matched the dominance, scattering six hits over six shutout frames before turning it over to Kendall Ward, who closed the door in the seventh inning.
The lone run came in the top of the seventh. LCU's Kristen Boyd was hit by a pitch to start the inning and was replaced by pinch-runner Cat Prisock. A sacrifice bunt from Yaya Kaaialii moved Prisock into scoring position. With two outs, Hamilton came through with a clutch single to center, scoring Prisock for the game's only run.
St. Edward's had its chance in the bottom half. Pelham led off with a walk and advanced to third on a groundout and a wild pitch, but Ward induced a routine grounder to short to seal the victory for Lubbock Christian (16-8 (7-7 LSC).
GAME NOTES
» Dix and Ward combined to shut out St. Edward's for LCU's fifth shutout of the season (tied for third in the LSC). Each pitcher has been part of two shutouts, with Ward being a part of two combined shutouts (Dix has a complete and a combined shutout).
» Ward, a freshman from Round Rock, Texas, registered her third save of the season and co-leads the LSC in the category.
» The win was LCU's first of the season when scoring two runs or less (1-6)
» Lubbock Christian pitchers limited St. Edward's to just 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. On the day, SEU was 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position. Hamilton's game winning RBI was LCU's lone hit of the day with runners in scoring position (1-for-12).
» Lubbock Christian pitchers faced 27 Saint Edward's hitters in the game, allowing 11 ground balls and eight fly balls.
» Only three Lady Chaps had a hit on the day, with Ashlinn Hamilton going 2-for-3 on the afternoon. Riley Flores (1-for-3) and Kadin Vire (1-for-7) were the only other Lady Chaps with at least one hit on the afternoon. Flores was 3-for-3 reaching base in a leadoff at-bat on the day.
» LCU, improving to 2-1 in one-run decisions, won their first 1-0 game of the season. It is their ninth 1-0 win in program history and the first since May 3, 2024 in Canyon, Texas over No.21 Angelo State.
