LUBBOCK, Texas (April 17, 2025) – Lubbock Christian set a new program record for runs scored in a single game, beating Cameron 34-17 on Thursday night at Hays Field.
Â
It is the second-most runs scored in a game by a Division II team this season and breaks the previous Chaparral record of 32, which was set against West Texas A&M on April 10, 1994 in a game where LCU also allowed 17 runs. It is also the highest single-game total for runs (51) in a D-II game.
Â
The Chaps clubbed six homers in the game, including three from
Brevin McCool and one each from
Jacob Gutierrez,
Johnny Gomez III and
Kyle Lewis. McCool's three round-trippers give him 26 on the season now, and he is back to having more total bases (168) than he does at-bats (167). He was also intentionally walked twice. The homer from Lewis was his first-ever in a Chap uniform.
Â
Another key for the LCU offense was their ability to reach base via the walk, which they did 16 times in just six innings at the plate. The last time they walked at least 16 times in a single game was April 4, 2024, when they did so against Texas A&M-Kingsville. But that game lasted 13 innings.
Â
Senior
Alec Stanfield (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Lubbock Christian, as they improved to 26-17 overall and 25-16 in LSC play. The right-hander went 2.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits, allowing one walk and striking out three.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
If you can believe it, the first inning and a half of the game did not feature a single run scored.
Â
LCU broke through in the bottom of the second, plating seven runs, thanks in large part to McCool's grand slam, to take the lead. Cameron got a run with a solo shot in the third, but the Chaps roared back with a whopping 13 runs in the bottom of the frame.
Â
And all 13 runs came with two outs. It is the first time LCU has scored 12 or more runs in a single inning since March 29, 2019, when they did it in a 28-1 win against Newman. The Chaps loaded the bases with and pushed in a run with a walk, before a wild pitch and an error plated two more. Then McCool homered for the first time in the inning. Three batters later, Gomez homered as well so that the Chaps batted around.
Frayner Chavez drove in a run, more runs came across on wild pitches, and McCool homered a second time – this time a three-run shot – before the frame finally ended, with the Chaps leading by 19.
Â
The Aggies wouldn't go down without a fight though. They immediately answered back in a big way, scoring 10 runs of their own in the fourth, five of which came with two outs. After a solo homer from Lewis in the bottom of the inning was all LCU got, CU went back to work with five more two-out runs in the fifth, cutting the deficit to just five before Stanfield got the final out of the frame.
Â
Lubbock Christian got the offense going again in the fifth with four runs and Stanfield limited the Aggies to a single tally in the sixth. In the bottom of the frame, the Chaps exploded again, this time more in part due to walks, for nine runs. There were six free passes issued in the frame, as
Shea Bowen's two-run single with two outs broke the school scoring record.
Â
Stanfield worked around a two-out walk and infield single to close out the game.
