McCool Breaks Another Record as Chaps Soar Past Falcons

29th, 30th Home Runs Give McCool LSC Single-Season Record

ODESSA, Texas (April 25, 2025) – Brevin McCool clubbed his 29th and 30th home runs of the season on Friday as Lubbock Christian run-ruled UT Permian Basin 21-1 in the series-opener at Roden Field.

The two homers for McCool marked another milestone for the senior in a season full of them, as he broke the Lone Star Conference single-season record. He 30 so far this season surpass the mark of 29 set by former Cameron outfielder Chase Larsson in 2011. McCool now own the conference's single-game, single-season and career home run records.

McCool had a lot of help to get the Chaps to the 21 runs though. Three other Chaps had multi-hit games, led by Nicklaus Baumbach, who had four. Jacob Gutierrez led the way in RBI with five, including a three-run homer in the fifth.

Karson Dunn started on the mound and picked up his first-ever win for Lubbock Christian (30-17, 29-16). The right-hander went 5.1 innings, giving up one run on one hit, allowing five walks and striking out three. Freshman Nick Blevins also made an impact on the mound for the Chaparrals, throwing 1.2 shutout innings while allowing no hits, with no walks and three strikeouts in just his second appearance of his collegiate career.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chaparrals got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Lubbock Christian got an RBI single from Brock Tijerina, scoring Gutierrez from second base.

The Falcons then tied the ballgame at one before the Chaparrals came back to reclaim their advantage in the third inning. The Lubbock Christian offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Kyle Lewis, which brought the score to 5-1 in favor of the Chaparrals.

Lubbock Christian held Texas-Permian Basin scoreless before building their lead to 8-1 the following inning. The Chaparrals recorded three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-RBI double from Lewis.

LCU broke the game open in the fifth with a 10-run inning, scoring eight of the runs with two outs as the Falcons used three pitchers in the frame. McCool's record-breaking blast came in the inning, and three Chaps earned RBI by drawing bases-loaded walks.

The Chaparrals expanded their lead to 21-1 in the seventh inning. LCU scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single off the bat of Gutierrez. Blevins closed out the game with a three-up, three-down inning in the seventh.

GAME NOTES
» Dunn and Blevins combined to limit the Falcons to just one hit. It is the second time this season LCU has limited an opponent to just one hit (Feb. 15 vs. OC).
» Although he now holds all of the LSC records, McCool is still chasing the LCU program home run records. He needs two more to break the school's single-season record (Barry Wilkins, 1987), and four more to break the career record (John Harris, 1973-76).
» Lubbock Christian has won its last four scheduled nine-inning games in just seven via run-rules.
» This is the third different win streak of at least six games for the Chaparrals this season.
» Neither team attempted a stolen base in the game.
