LUBBOCK, Texas (April 26, 2025) – Lubbock Christian University snapped No. 1 West Texas A&M's 28-game winning streak and handed the Lady Buffs their first West Division loss of the season, claiming a 4-1 victory to open their Lone Star Conference West Division doubleheader.
The win over the nation's top-ranked team in the "Rivalry on the Range" matchup quickly turned into "Waiting on the Range," as lightning forced a delay of nearly six hours during the nightcap. West Texas A&M regrouped after the long pause and avoided a sweep, holding off LCU with a 6-4 win in a second game that ended close to 1 a.m., snapping the Lady Chaps' nine-game winning streak.
Game 1
Kristen Boyd homered and drove in three runs to back a strong pitching effort from
Teoni Lamb and
Reese Farrar, helping Lubbock Christian knock off top-ranked West Texas A&M 4-1 in Friday's opener.
Senior
Teoni Lamb (9-7), with her family from Australia in attendance, started in the circle and picked up the win for Lubbock Christian (33-18, 24-17). The right-hander went 5.1 innings, giving up one run on six hits, allowing two walks and striking out six.
Reese Farrar also made an impact in the circle for the Chaparrals, throwing 1.2 shutout innings while allowing no hits, with no walks and one strikeout to garner her first save of the season.
At the plate, the Chaparrals were led by
Kristen Boyd, who went 3-for-3 on the day with a double, a home run and three RBI.
Kendra Levesque furnished a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
LCU grabbed an early lead in the first inning after
Kawehi Ili walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a two-out RBI single by Boyd. The Lady Chaps threatened again in the second when
Piper Garcia singled and moved to second on another wild pitch, but a strikeout and flyout ended the inning. LCU stretched the lead in the fourth when Boyd led off with a solo home run to left field, her third hit of the afternoon, pushing the lead to 2-1.
West Texas A&M (48-3, 37-2) briefly tied the game in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by starting pitcher Emilee Boyer, but LCU quickly regained momentum in the fifth.
Sophia Reyes reached on an error and was replaced by pinch-runner
Cat Prisock, who came around to score on a two-out RBI single from Levesque. Following a
Baylea Myers infield single, Boyd delivered again with an RBI-double to left field, bringing home
Hayeli Acosta, who had entered as a pinch runner for Levesque, and giving LCU a 4-1 advantage.
The Lady Chaps' pitching staff handled the rest. After a single by Cadence Colborn put two on with one out in the sixth, Farrar entered and shut the door, inducing a fielder's choice and a lineout to left to escape the jam. Farrar retired all five batters she faced to pick up her first save and preserving Lamb's ninth win of the season. LCU matched West Texas A&M in hits (six each) but capitalized better on its opportunities.

Game 2
WT held off a late rally from LCU in the second game to claim a 6-4 win, surviving a 5-hour, 40-minute weather delay in the process, as the game concluded at nearly 1 a.m. The Lady Chaps out-hit the Lady Buffs 7-6 after the delay but left key runners on base in the final innings as WT held on behind a save from Boyer
HOW IT HAPPENED
West Texas A&M (49-3, 39-3) opened the scoring in the second inning with a two-run home run from Trinity Kuntz, followed immediately by a solo shot from Avery Cannon to take a 3-0 lead.
LCU (33-19, 24-18) answered in the third as
Sophia Reyes singled and scored on
Kawehi Ili's RBI-triple, trimming the margin to 3-1.
Momentum shifted in the top of the fifth when an error allowed Emily Liskai to reach and ultimately score on Abby Howell's RBI groundout after the lengthy lightning delay, pushing WT's lead to 4-1. The Lady Buffs added another run in the sixth when Brianna Stokes, pinch running after a single from Heaven Moreno, stole home to make it 5-1.
LCU clawed back in the bottom of the sixth as Reyes singled again and Ili was hit by a pitch. After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position,
Kendra Levesque doubled to left-center to drive in two runs, cutting the deficit to 5-3. A throwing error later put the tying run aboard, but LCU stranded two runners to end the inning in zany fashion. WT attempted a throw-down (pickoff attempt) to first base, and the throw hit LCU batter, Prisock, in the head (as she was in standard position in the box). Home plate umpired ruled obstruction, ending the LCU rally.
Howell extended the WT lead in the seventh with a two-out solo home run to straightaway center. The Lady Chaps made one final push in the bottom of the frame, as Flores and Reyes each singled before Ili doubled in a run. However, after Boyer entered the circle to pitch, LCU's rally stalled with a strikeout and flyout to end the game, leaving the tying runs stranded.
Heidi Vortherms earned the win for West Texas A&M, allowing four hits and three runs over six innings, while
Natalee Gray took the loss for LCU after allowing four runs (three earned) across four innings of work.
