Chaps Finish Strong, Eye LSC Postseason Title After Regular Season Split

LCU Men’s Tennis Caps Regular Season at 20-2, Enters LSC Championships as No. 2 Seed

LUBBOCK, Texas (April 28, 2025) - No. 5 Lubbock Christian University men's tennis wrapped up the regular season by splitting a pair of Lone Star Conference duals, sweeping Dallas Baptist 7-0 on Saturday before falling 4-3 in a title-deciding match at No. 8 UT Tyler on Sunday. The Chaps (20-2, 7-1 LSC) finished second in the LSC standings and will head into the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed.

LCU rolled to a dominant win over Dallas Baptist (14-9, 1-6) Saturday in Dallas. After claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles—highlighted by a 6-2 win from Kelly Giese and Jordan Georgiev at the top flight—the Chaps swept all six singles matches in straight sets. Pablo Segura was first off with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, quickly followed by Marco Seccia's 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4. Giese, ranked No. 11 nationally, clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles, with Andres De Los Rios, Blas Ruiz Romero, and Georgiev closing out dominant performances.

Sunday's clash at UT Tyler (21-1, 8-0) decided the LSC regular-season crown, and the Patriots claimed the doubles point by sweeping all three matches, with Giese and Georgiev falling 6-2 to the No. 6-ranked duo of Carel Wessel and Daniil Felker. In singles play, the Chaps fought back valiantly. Mattia Ghedin delivered LCU's first point with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3, and No.19 Segura battled back for a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 2 over No. 15-ranked Artiom Dorofeev. Giese capped the singles action with an emphatic 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2) win over No. 6-ranked Wessel at the top flight. However, UT Tyler's earlier singles wins at Nos. 5, 4 and 6 were enough to secure the 4-3 dual victory and the LSC regular-season title.

Giese (21-7) led LCU over the weekend, finishing 2-0 at the No. 1 singles position and picking up a top-10 national win (improved to 5-2 against nationally ranked opponents in singles). Segura also shined with a pair of singles victories, including a gritty three-set comeback Sunday to place him with a team-leading 26 wins (26-5). Giese (13-match win streak) and Segura (6-match win streak) are each riding big win streaks into the postseason. Ghedin added a crucial singles point in each match.

The Chaps now turn their focus to the LSC Championships in Arlington, Texas, where they will open semifinal play Friday at 9 a.m. against No. 3-seeded UT Permian Basin (12-7, 5-3 LSC).
