Queens Toppled as Chaps Serve Up Royal Triumph in NCAA Opener

Lubbock Christian Sweeps Queens College to Advance to First-Ever NCAA Quarterfinal

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. (May 20, 2025) — No. 5-ranked Lubbock Christian University men's tennis continued its historic postseason run Tuesday morning with a dominant 4-0 sweep of No. 33-ranked Queens College (N.Y.) in the First Round of the NCAA Division II National Championships at Sanlando Park. With the win, the No. 4-seeded Chaparrals (24-2) advances to Wednesday's quarterfinal round to face No. 5-seeded Grand Valley State (2 p.m. CT).

LCU seized early control by winning two tightly contested doubles courts to secure the opening point. At No. 1 doubles, ITA All-American Kelly Giese and Jordan Georgiev pulled away late for a 6-4 win over Queens' top tandem of Lucas Foix Sotos and Samuel Linck. At No. 3, Pablo Segura and Andres De Los Rios clinched the doubles point in a tiebreak thriller, outlasting Tim Andersson and Viktor Ek Johansson 7-6 (7-3).
The No. 2 doubles match was halted at 6-6 after the point was decided.

In singles, the Chaparrals showcased their depth and composure across the board, with three straight-set wins to close the match before Queens could gain a foothold. Mattia Ghedin was first off at No. 3 singles, breezing past Johansson 6-1, 6-3 for his 20th win of the season and third straight victory. Marco Seccia followed with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Linck at line five, extending his win streak to three and improving to 13-3 in duals.

With the match firmly in hand, it was Giese — the No. 9-ranked singles player nationally — who sealed LCU's first-ever NCAA postseason sweep. The Lone Star Conference Player of the Year secured the clincher at line one, defeating Sotos 6-4, 6-2, marking his second consecutive match-clinching performance and bringing his dual record at No. 1 to 14-6 (24-8 overall).

The remaining singles matches were left unfinished, though Segura (No. 13 nationally) led two sets to none in a gritty contest at line two, and De Los Rios and Blas Ruiz Romero were in tight battles at lines four and six, respectively.

With the victory, LCU improved to 2-2 all-time in NCAA postseason play and 2-0 this postseason. The shutout marked the Chaps' ninth sweep of the season and their first in NCAA postseason history. Queens, making its second straight trip to the final site and its 23rd consecutive postseason appearance, ends its season at 18-5.

Key contributors in LCU's two postseason victories include Giese, who has delivered both clinching singles wins, and Seccia, who has won three straight matches. Ghedin has emerged as another vital performer with his 20-win season, while Segura and De Los Rios continue to lead LCU's top doubles tandem with a 16-9 record. The Chaps will now prepare for their first-ever NCAA quarterfinal appearance, scheduled for 2 p.m. CT on Wednesday against No. 10-ranked Grand Valley State, who topped Columbus State 4-1 Tuesday.
