SAN ANGELO, Texas (May 8, 2025) – Just before the clock struck midnight at Foster Field, Lubbock Christian magically transformed, turning a three-run deficit into an eight-run lead on the way to a 12-5 upset win over top-seeded and No. 1 ranked Angelo State on Thursday night/Friday morning.
Â
It was an 11-run frame for the Chaps (34-19) in a game in which they had previously only tallied two hits. They faced five different Ram pitchers in the inning and sent 15 batters to the plate in the deciding eighth inning. Â
Â
Logan Moore got the win in relief, improving to 4-2 on the year despite getting just two outs in the game.
Alec Stanfield closed out the game, getting the final six outs in the eighth and ninth on 28 pitches while striking out three.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a pitcher's duel early, as Chap starter
Karson Dunn and Ram starter Dax Dathe matched each other with zeroes through the first four frames. Dathe actually had a no-hitter going through the first three innings, until
Nicklaus Baumbach's one-out double in the fourth.
Â
ASU broke the scoreless tie in the fifth when Justin Harris led off with a solo homer. They scored one more in the frame and added a single run in the sixth.
Â
Baumbach still had the only LCU hit of the day when he came up again in the seventh, and he got another, this time crushing an opposite field home run to get the Chaps on the board. The Rams got the run back in the bottom of the inning before LCU took control of the game with their big eighth inning.
Â
Ram reliever Nick Wilson had already come into the game to take the place of Dathe, and Wilson allowed a leadoff single to
Frayner Chavez. That forced another call to the bullpen for Josh Reed. Reed only threw two pitches to
Kade York, the second of which was blasted over the Angelo State bullpen in left field.
Â
Two more relievers and two baserunners later,
Jacob Gutierrez grounded out to score
Kyle Lewis and tie the game at 4-4. Then the Chaps got back-to-back walks to load the bases for
Brock Tijerina, whose two-run single put LCU ahead for the first time all night.
Adam Garcia followed with an RBI single and ended up scoring on a wild pitch before Lewis, in his second at-bat of the inning, homered just inside the left field foul pole for three more runs.
Brevin McCool scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Â
Stanfield worked around a hit-by-pitch in the eighth for a shutdown inning and struck out a pair in the ninth to close out the win.
Â
Lubbock Christian now advances to a winners bracket matchup with the No. 3 seed St. Edwards, which upset the No. 2 seed UT Tyler in the first round. First pitch for the game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
