ABCA Recognizes Three Chaps

McCool, Markwardt, Gutierrez Honored

GREENSBORO, N.C. (June 2, 2025) – Three Lubbock Christian players were honored with various American Baseball Coaches Association All-Region honors, including Brevin McCool, Ryan Markwardt and Jacob Gutierrez.
 
McCool and Markwardt were named to the All-Region First Team, claiming Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year, respectively. Gutierrez was named to the All-Region Second Team.
 
McCool is now the unanimous All-South Central Region Player of the Year, after already winning the award from the NCBWA and the D2CCA. He has also already been named an All-American by both of those organizations along with National Player of the Year honors. He was also the LSC Player of the Year and Academic Player of the Year. He won LSC Hitter of the Week four times and NCBWA Regional Hitter of the Week four times as well. He hit .406 for the season and added in 47 walks for a .507 on-base percentage. McCool hit 31 home runs this year, breaking the LSC single-game, single-season and career home run records in the process. He added in 15 doubles and four triples for a .936 slugging percentage and 205 total bases.
 
Markwardt is also the consensus South Central Region Pitcher of the Year, claiming both the NCBWA and D2CCA awards as well. The Itasca, Texas, native was also the LSC Pitcher of the Year and named to the LSC All-Tournament Team after a seven strikeout complete game against St. Edward's. In 16 starts this season, he pitched 86.2 innings with an ERA of 3.53. He tossed four complete games and three shutouts while striking out 89. Opponents hit just .253 against him during the year. His 235 career strikeouts in three seasons at LCU put him tied for the eighth-most all-time in program history.
 
This is the second All-Region honor for Gutierrez, who also earned a spot on the All-Region Second Team from the NCBWA. The Lubbock native was an All-Conference First Team selection in the outfield, leading the Chaps in batting average at .408. Gutierrez hit 10 doubles, four triples and seven home runs for a slugging percentage of .587 and 128 total bases. Hitting in the three-hole much of the season, Gutierrez drove in 57 runs and also scored 57. He has another season with the Chaps, but his current career batting average of .413 is the eighth-best in in school history.
 
Lubbock Christian finished the 2025 season 34-23 overall, finishing fourth in the Lone Star Conference standings with a 30-18 league record. The Chaps reached the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season and sixth time in program history.
