LCU Drops Tight Contest to No. 20 FHSU

Late Tiger Goal Dooms Chaps

HAYS, Kan. (September 18, 2025) — No. 20 Fort Hays State edged Lubbock Christian University 1-0 on Thursday at FHSU Soccer Stadium. The decisive goal came in the second half with less than 10 minutes left on the clock. 

The Chaparrals managed three shots on goal but were unable to convert any into scores. Fort Hays State's defense held firm, earning a shutout in the tightly contested match.

Lubbock Christian stands at 1-4-0 overall after the loss. Fort Hays State improved to 3-0-2 overall following the victory.

The first half began with Fort Hays State applying early pressure, but Lubbock Christian's defense, led by goalkeeper Connor Pettigrew, held firm. Pettigrew recorded key saves at the 9:51 and 10:25 marks, maintaining the scoreless draw. 

Despite a late attempt by Manu Nunez in the 41st minute, saved by Fort Hays State's goalkeeper Payton Roehrich, both teams went into the break tied at 0-0, highlighting a defensive stalemate.

The second half commenced with both teams fielding their starting lineups, but the action quickly turned physical as fouls and yellow cards dominated play. 

The Chaps' Nunez tested Fort Hays State's goalkeeper with a shot in the 49th minute, which was saved, maintaining the deadlock. The match's decisive moment came in the 81st minute when Juan Linares scored for Fort Hays State, with the visitors unable to equalize despite a late effort from Aron DePaula
