Segura, Chaps Capture Flights to Open Season at Islander Open

Segura Goes Undefeated As LCU Men Shine In DI-Heavy Field

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (September 18, 2025) – Lubbock Christian University men's tennis opened its 2025–26 season with a championship-filled weekend at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open, hosted by Texas A&M–Corpus Christi. The Chaparrals, the lone Division II program in a field stacked with Division I opposition, came away with titles in both singles and doubles flights during the three-day event.

Senior Pablo Segura stole the show, going 3–0 in singles play to win the second flight. The Playa del Carmen, Mexico, native capped his run with a gritty three-set win over Incarnate Word's Augustin Salazar in Sunday's final, sealing his undefeated weekend. Segura then partnered with Kelly Giese to storm through the top doubles flight, collecting wins over tandems from UT Rio Grande Valley, Abilene Christian and Texas A&M–Corpus Christi to secure the doubles crown.

LCU's depth showed across the draw with several other strong performances. Andres De Los Rios rebounded from a tight three-set loss to pick up back-to-back singles wins, while also teaming with Jordan Georgiev for a pair of wins in their doubles flight. Mattia Ghedin and Marco Seccia each recorded singles victories and capped the weekend with a doubles win, while Alexandre Sulpicy notched two dominant straight-set wins in his singles flight.

The Islander Open marked the start of the Chaparrals' fourth intercollegiate season, building off last spring's historic run to the NCAA Division II national semifinals.
Next up, the Chaps travel south to San Antonio for the Trinity Fall Invitational, hosted by Trinity University, beginning Sept. 19.
