CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (September 18, 2025) – Lubbock Christian University women's tennis opened its 2025–26 season this past weekend in a challenging Division I-heavy field at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open, hosted by Texas A&M–Corpus Christi. The three-day tournament featured a mix of singles and doubles flights, with the Lady Chaparrals joining Texas A&M–Kingsville as the lone Division II programs in attendance.
The event marked the collegiate debut for freshmen
Kristel Jativa and Ana Sofía Valero Treviño, who competed in their first matches for LCU. Both gained valuable experience against Division I competition, with Treviño going 2-0 in singles and Jativa topping TAMUK's Andrea Landaeta and collecting a pair of doubles wins (teamed with Trevino).
LCU also saw competitive showings from returners
Andrea De Bernardo and
AnaMaria Zoric, who each notched singles wins in their respective flights. De Bernardo, a junior from Caracas, Venezuela, went 2-1 with a pair of wins over Division I foes, while Zoric picked up a win over Incarnate Word's Amelie Montalvo.
In doubles play, the pairing of
Oshini Herath /
AnaMaria Zoric and Jativa / Valero Trevino each had a pair of wins.
The Islander Open served as the season debut for an LCU squad coming off a historic spring campaign, which saw the Lady Chaparrals earn the program's first-ever NCAA postseason appearance in just their third year of intercollegiate play.
Next up, LCU turns its attention to the ITA South Central Regional Championships, hosted by UT Tyler, beginning Sept. 25 in Tyler, Texas.
