GOODWELL, Okla. (April 18, 1978) - Tim Leslie smashed his 17th, 18th and 19th homers as Lubbock Christian College presented coach Larry Hays with his 300th and 301st career wins with 17-2 and 9-7 decisions over Panhandle State Tuesday.
Oscar Acosta benefited from an 11-run sixth inning in the opener as the freshman righthander posted his 10th win in 11 decisions.
Tommy Inman hit his 11th and 12th homers of the year and Glenn Wilken chipped in with his eighth and Kenny Toney his fifth as the Chaps unleashed 19 hits in the opener and 17 more in the nightcap.
LCC, now 37-13, had to battle from behind in the nightcap, finally winning it in the seventh, with reliever Bob McNicol picking up his sixth win in eight decisions.
"The wind was blowing out to right field and that affected all the pitchers," Hays said. "It was a tough day because of that. But we competed well. We made most of the plays defensively ans swung the bat well.
"I was disappointed with the pitching, but I hope the weather had something to do with it. McNicol and (Dan) Sanders threw well in relief."
Inman opened the first game with a single and, after Darius Copley singled for his sixth consecutive hit over a two-game period, Leslie homered.
In the fifth Copley, Leslie and Steve Brigante had consecutive singles and Richard Bowles a two-run triple to account for three runs.
The first 12 chaps reached base in the sixth inning. Clark Langdon reached on an error Bobby Doe had a pinch-hit single and Inman homered. Copley, Leslie, Mark Lisle and Brigante followed with singles, Bowles and Wilken doubled, Langdon singled and Doe doubled before Inman reached on an error. Panhandle then retired three straight batters.
Steve McCathy singled for two runs and Gary Trainer got a sacrifice fly, which staked the Aggies to a 3-0 lead in the first frame of the nightcap. LCC struck for five runs in the third. Inman led off with a homer, Leslie connected with one out and, with two down, Brigante singled, Toney homered and Wilken homered.
In the fourth, Inman singled, stole second and third and scored on Copley's single, but Gary Ledoux unloaded a three-run homer for the hosts in the bottom of the inning to knot the score at 6-6.
Leslie led off the seventh with a homer, which accounted for his 69th RBI of the year. Lisle doubled, Brigante singled him in and took second on the throw to the plate and scored on Toney's single.
Panhandle, now 12-20, got a run in the last of the seventh on a double, an error and an infield out.
LCC will face Dallas Baptist Friday-Saturday in Dallas in a key Texoma Conference series.
