What a Birthday Present!

Stephenson Hurls No-No

LUBBOCK, Texas - Gary Stephenson quite likely will never forget his 18th birthday, which occurred on March 13, 1984. He threw a no-hitter against Missouri Southern.

Stephenson, whose LCC career was hampered by shoulder problems and posted only a 4-2 mark with a 9.13 earned run average from 1984 to 1986, got his first collegiate start on that day.

"I really hadn't thought about it (the no-hitter) during the game that much," says Stephenson, who struck out seven and walked four. "But then Kirk Dudley showed me the chart. I looked at it and couldn't see any hits for them. But I didn't want to say anything about it because I thought it might jinx me. I think I was the only one that knew for a while."

The no-no almost ended in the top of the first.

"I walked two batters. Then a guy hit a pitch pretty good that Rich (Wieligman) caught and turned into a double play. Randy (Ledbetter) also made a good play in left field on a pretty well-hit ball to end the inning."

That was the only problem area, as Stephenson coasted to a 10-0, five-inning victory. His story appeared on AP wires and also in USA Today the following day.
