LUBBOCK, Texas (October 24, 2014) – Attack errors riddled Lubbock Christian in a four-set loss to No. 25 West Texas A&M Friday night at the Rip Griffin Center, allowing the Lady Buffs to accumulate 15 blocks against the Lady Chaps and extend WT's win streak to six over LCU dating to 2010.
Despite having four Lady Chaps with double-digit kills, LCU amassed a paltry .114 attack percentage compared to .267 by the Lady Buffs.
Channing Castleberry had a team-high 13 kills,
Christiana Tavo recorded a career-high dozen, and
Maddie Johnson and
Amy Edwards each supplied 10.
The first set on the evening stayed close early with the teams exchanging leads. With the game tied 11-11, WT went on a 6-1 run that was marred by two LCU attack errors, a block error and a ball handling error. A kill by Edwards pulled the Lady Chaps to within 18-14, but a trio of Lady Buff kills gave WT a seven point advantage, carrying the visitors to a 25-17 win.
The Lady Chaps opened the second set with a block from Edwards and Castleberry followed by a Castleberry kill, providing momentum that inspired a 9-4 lead on an
Erin Fisher dump to center court. Tavo slid over from the right side to the middle, throwing down a kill and putting LCU ahead 14-11. But once again, WT strung together a run, jumping ahead 18-16 after a kill by Lexi Davis. Moments later, kills by
Samantha Matthews and Tavo tied the frame at 19-all before two Lady Buff kills gave WT a 23-21 edge. A ball handling error was then whistled on the Lady Buffs, and Castleberry tacked on a kill to knot the game at 23-23. A kill by WT's Jessica Johnson put the Lady Buffs at set point, but the Lady Chaps were bailed out on a tipped Castleberry attack. On the next play, an attack from WT's Lauren Bevan landed just wide of the sideline to put LCU in control at 25-24 before Edwards came through with a huge stop on an attack attempt by Davis, shutting her down from the middle to tie the match at 1-1.
Two Lady Buff blocks midway through the third set put the Lady Chaps at a 13-8 disadvantage, and LCU was unable to completely recover, dropping the stanza by a score of 25-15. In the do-or-die set four for LCU, the Lady Chaps hit into a WT block and failed to convert on the next two attempts, falling behind 7-5. Another Lady Buff block gave WT a 10-6 edge before kills by Matthews, Tavo and Edwards closed the gap to 11-9. The lead then grew to 19-13 on a WT service ace but was then equaled out as Kameryn Hayes misfired her next serve to pull LCU to within 19-14. However, the Lady Chaps were unable to pull any closer, dropping the set and match at 25-17.
Fisher handed out a game-high 45 assists, and
Christa Daniel's 24 digs led all players.
For WT, Bevan totaled 16 kills.
The Lady Chaps face off with Arkansas-Fort Smith tomorrow at noon in the Rip in a 1-2 Heartland showdown.
