Lady Chaps climb into sole possession of second place

LUBBOCK, Texas (October 4, 2014) – Led once again by the duo of Maddie Johnson and Channing Castleberry, Lubbock Christian took down St. Edward's in three straight sets to take control of second place within the Heartland Conference Saturday afternoon at the Rip Griffin Center.

Coming into the contest, the Lady Chaps (10-1, 7-1 Heartland) and Hilltoppers (10-2, 6-2 Heartland) were deadlocked for the number two spot in the league. Castleberry and Johnson each tallied 13 kills to help LCU to scores of 25-23, 25-23, 25-15 in the match victory.

The first set was evenly played throughout, with the Lady Chaps taking their first lead at 8-7 on a dump by Erin Fisher. Ten points later, Fisher boosted LCU to another one-point advantage at 18-17 by way of a service ace, and a solo block moments later by Samantha Matthews gave the Lady Chaps a two-point cushion, 20-18. Two St. Edward's kills knotted the set at 22-all until Castleberry soared an attack over an SEU block to put LCU on top. Hilltopper Hannah Rauch answered with a kill of her own to tie the frame at 23-all, but a kill by Amy Edwards put LCU at set-point, and an attack from Rauch sailed wide for the Lady Chap win.

LCU cruised out to a 17-7 lead in the second stanza, punctuated by a powerful kill from Castleberry that zipped through a Hilltopper block. However, SEU did not want to go away quietly, putting together an 11-4 run that included seven unanswered points to pull within 20-18. A pair of big kills by Johnson, one which terminated the seemingly never-ending SEU run, helped the Lady Chaps to a 22-19 edge. A big-time block by Matthews and Abby White put LCU up 23-19, but a kill and ace by SEU made it a two-point game. Castleberry placed the Lady Chaps within a point of victory with another kill, but SEU hung on to creep within 24-23 before White game through with a final kill.

The Lady Chaps turned an 8-7 advantage into a 12-7 lead in set three to set the tone before jumping ahead 18-10 on a block by Matthews and Fisher. Edwards found the back corner for a kill after a long rally to put LCU ahead, 23-13, and the final point of the match was attributed to a Hilltopper service error.

Fisher recorded a game-high 38 assists and Christa Daniel handled a team-high 22 digs.

For St. Edward's, Amy Jones totaled 10 kills and Kelly Jimenez had 30 digs.

The Lady Chaps travel to Canyon on Tuesday to take on regional powerhouse West Texas A&M at 7 p.m.
