Castleberry, Lady Chaps sweep away Dustdevils

LUBBOCK, Texas (October 9, 2014) – A double-double by Channing Castleberry directed Lubbock Christian to a three-set sweep of Texas A&M International Thursday night at the Rip Griffin Center, as the Lady Chaps started slowly but were able to dust off TAMIU by scores of 25-23, 25-19 and 25-12.

The freshman outside hitter totaled a game-high 13 kills and 15 digs, setter Erin Fisher led all players with 38 assists, and libero Malori Maddox had a game-high 16 digs. The Lady Chaps (11-2, 8-1 Heartland Conference) eclipsed a .300 attack percentage for the second time on the season in the midst of tallying 49 kills to TAMIU's 29.

Set one included six lead changes and 11 ties, one of which occurred on a rare set by middle blocker Amy Edwards to Maddie Johnson to knot the frame at 17-all. Abby White gave LCU the final lead change of the set at 22-21 on a well-placed attack that landed between three sprawling defenders. Two final kills by Samantha Matthews and Edwards awarded the set to the Lady Chaps.

A kill by Dustdevil Tazmin Apple brought the second set to a 10-10 tie before LCU went on a scoring tear, including five Johnson kills, three of which were sequential, to propel the Lady Chaps to a 19-11 advantage. The Dustdevils (1-14, 1-7 Heartland Conference) went on a mini-run of their own, closing to within 21-16, but LCU was able to hold TAMIU to three more points and finished off the set with an Edwards' tip that floated over two blockers.

The Lady Chaps took control in set three, creeping out to a 10-6 lead on a Matthews' kill. The freshman middle blocker then teamed up with Christiana Tavo for a block on Dustdevil Alex Ciszek which preceded two TAMIU attack errors and a Fisher service ace for a 15-6 LCU lead. The Lady Chaps quickly extended the lead to 23-10 and the match was ultimately terminated on a Dustdevil service error.

For TAMIU, Miaje Hubbard tallied 12 kills, and Lizzie Prieto had 27 assists.

The Lady Chaps are back home on Saturday hosting St. Mary's at noon.
