SAN ANGELO, Texas (November 8, 2014) – Lubbock Christian concluded the 2014 season with a sweep of Lone Star Conference member Angelo State behind team highs by
Maddie Johnson,
Erin Fisher and
Christa Daniel on Saturday afternoon at the Junell Center to finish the year with an 18-5 overall record and 13-3 in Heartland Conference play.
The Belles of ASU (19-7, 11-5 Lone Star) came into the contest as the ninth-ranked team in the South Region, but the Lady Chaps came out competing like a team still playing for a post season berth and ousted a squad that had not been swept at home since the 2010 season. In the 3-0 win, (25-18, 25-23, 25-22) Johnson compiled a dozen kills, current Heartland Setter of the Week Fisher logged 30 assists, and Daniel handled 23 digs.
After not trailing the entire first set, the Lady Chaps found themselves sharing the lead in set two on multiple occasions. An ASU block on an attack by
Channing Castleberry put the Belles up 5-2, and a kill by ASU's Mallory Blauser extended the lead to 8-4. Johnson tallied back-to-back kills, and one apiece from Fisher and
Abby White tied the game at 9-9. The Lady Chaps climbed ahead at 12-11 following a net violation on the Belles, but with the set tied at 15-15, ASU pieced together a 5-1 run to jump ahead, 20-16, leading to another LCU timeout. Fisher giftwrapped a perfect set to
Amy Edwards on a slide to tie things up at 22-22, and the teams found themselves in a familiar spot at 23-all. LCU forced two ASU attack errors to finalize the set two win.
The Lady Chaps led through the majority of set three until 17-16 on a kill by the Belle's Daileigh Castile. A service ace by ASU forced head coach
Jennifer Lawrence to call a timeout, and White responded with a pair of kills, and
Malori Maddox served up an ace to regain the lead at 19-18. Castleberry slammed down a kill, and Edwards and White teamed up for a block and a 21-19 LCU lead. Another kill from White moments later down the right side put her team up 23-20 before an ASU attack error placed the Lady Chaps at match point. An LCU service error and kill by ASU's Brianna Sotello sliced the margin to 24-22, but Castleberry came through with the final point of the season for the Lady Chaps on a powerful kill to close the year on a win.
Due to LCU competing during its NCAA transition, Chap and Lady Chap teams are within their final respective seasons of no post season play. The five season losses in 2014 for the Lady Chaps are the least amount during Coach Lawrence's 11-year tenure and the fewest dating back to 1988 when the team went 38-4, advancing to the NAIA Elite Eight.
