Box Score LUBBOCK, Texas (September 12, 2014) –
Brooke Wendl's corner kick in the 69th minute was all Lubbock Christian University needed, as the Lady Chaparrals fought off the elements and Adams State University for a 1-0 win to remain perfect (3-0-0) on the young season. With the rainy and brisk conditions, the LCU home game was played on the artificial surface of Lubbock High School's Chapman Field.
Each team had four shots on goal in the opening half, but neither team was able to get on the scoreboard. LCU's best chance came on a steal and a breakaway by
Claudia Sanchez, who deked to the left of a diving Molly O'Connor, but her shot attempt was turned aside by a defender on the line catching up to the play.
LCU had the 15-plus MPH wind to their back in the second half and it led to a tilted pitch. The Lady Chaps out-shot ASU 9-3 in the half and held ASU to zero shots on goal. Wendl took a corner kick from the left corner in the 69th minute and used the wind to bend the shot on frame. Kylie Ramirez tried to protect the back post and played the ball bending into the goal, but her momentum took her into her own goal as the ball was also going into the goal and she was unable to defend the line and keep the game scoreless. Wendl, who led all players with five shots, ended up with her fifth goal of the season and she also gets credit for the game winning goal for a second consecutive game. She increases her career program record marks in goals (28) and game winning goals (9) with the tally.
The Lady Chaps out-shot ASU 13-7 and had a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. They also produced a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. O'Connor, the ASU goalkeeper, suffered the loss and dropped to 1-2-0 on the season with three saves off four shots faced.
Lauren Story was in goal for LCU and stopped all three shots faced for her second shutout of the season and her career program leading ninth shutout. She has not allowed a goal over the last 190:15.
The three victories to open the season has LCU with a 3-0-0 record. It is their third best start to open a season and their best since a 12-0-0 start to open the 2012 season. The win over Adams State (1-3-0) was their first meeting against a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference member. LCU hosts another RMAC opponent Sunday, as they host Western State University of Colorado at 1 p.m. The game is still scheduled to be played on campus at LCU Soccer Field.
