ODESSA, Texas (September 27, 2104) –
Maddie Johnson and
Amy Edwards fueled Lubbock Christian with 16 kills apiece, and the Lady Chaps logged 16 total team blocks in a five-set win (25-17, 18-25, 31-29, 17-25, 15-10) over the University of Texas of the Permian Basin on Saturday afternoon at the Falcon Dome.

Set three was a dog fight as the teams were knotted in the match 1-1. Early on, Edwards shot a deep ball to the back corner for a 5-2 Lady Chap edge, and a block by Matthews and
Channing Castleberry upped the lead to four at 10-6. UTPB (6-7, 3-4 Heartland) pieced together a 5-1 run to tie the frame at 11-all before LCU (8-1, 6-1 Heartland) garnered its biggest lead for the remainder of the set at 16-13 on a Johnson kill. Head coach
Jennifer Lawrence was forced to call a timeout after the Falcons denied a shot by Castleberry to tie the game at 19-19. UTPB was given a point on a questionable line call to put the Lady Chaps down a pair at 21-19, and another Falcon block moments later upped UTPB's lead to 23-20, prompting another LCU timeout.
Back-to-back kills by Matthews and Johnson pulled Lubbock Christian to within 23-22, but a tip by UTPB's Ariana Gallardo had four Lady Chaps diving to the floor and coming up empty handed to put the Falcons on the brink of the set victory. Johnson answered with a kill, and a UTPB attack error tied the game at 24-all. More ties occurred at each point thereafter, with the final equalizer occurring on a costly Falcon service error to bring the score to 29-all. A kill by Tavo put the Lady Chaps at game point, and Castleberry capped the set with a kill for the two-point win.
UTPB regained momentum in set four, cruising out to a 12-6 lead that turned into a 17-10 advantage. Successive blocks by the duo of Tavo and Matthews inched the Lady Chaps to within 18-14, but a trio of LCU attack errors ballooned the Falcon lead to 21-14. At 23-17, UTPB closed the set with an LCU attack error and a Hannah Rebb kill to force a decisive fifth set.
Things went LCU's way to begin, with Tavo delivering a kill and
Kyleigh Lucia serving an ace for a 2-0 advantage. Five straight points by the Lady Chaps put UTPB in a 7-1 hole, but the Falcons came clawing back to narrow the margin to 7-4 with a pair of kills and an ace. LCU extended the lead to 13-8 on a Johnson kill and held the Falcons at bay as Edwards finished the match with a final kill.
