LUBBOCK, Texas (October 2, 2015) – A six-point run by Lubbock Christian University at the conclusion of set three against Oklahoma Panhandle State saved a 3-0 match sweep for the Lady Chaparrals Thursday night inside the Rip Griffin Center as LCU captured straight sets by scores of 25-11, 25-9 and 26-24.
The Lady Chaps (9-6, 4-2 Heartland) have never lost a match in 20 attempts versus the Aggies (1-14, 0-6 Heartland) and had swept every contest dating to 1983. On the night, 10 kills each by
Maddie Johnson and
Emily Hanaway led LCU.
Mallory Powell compiled a game-high 33 assists, and
Kelsie French led the defense with 17 digs. Offensively, the Lady Chaps hit a season-best .337 and their 11 errors tied for the lowest on the year.
In set one, LCU doubled up OPSU at 8-4 following four consecutive points. A pair of kills by Johnson, one by
Christiana Tavo and a service ace from French spurred a 9-0 run to quickly place the Lady Chaps at set point, 24-9. The Aggies fired off two points but doomed themselves with a final service error.
A block by Powell and
Ariel Froeschl gave LCU a 10-3 advantage in set two, but OPSU closed the gap to 12-8 on a Lady Chap ball handling error. The Aggies committed a slew of turnovers amidst a 10-0 LCU run that put the home team ahead, 22-8. Two kills by Hanaway and another from Johnson put the set away.
OPSU took control of set three, racing out to leads of 7-2, 13-6 and 19-12. The Lady Chaps seemed to be in trouble after a Johnson attack was blocked, giving the Aggies a 23-18 advantage. Kills by Tavo and Hanaway brought LCU to within 23-20, but a Lady Chap violation put OPSU at set point. A kill by Tavo up the middle and a block by Powell and Hanaway gave LCU life at 24-22. Johnson added another point on a kill and an Aggie attack error tied the set at 24-all. Once again, Johnson came alive, sealing the set and match with her final two kills to cap the 6-0 burst by the Lady Chaps.
The Lady Chaps travel to St. Edward's for a match on Thursday at 7 p.m. before continuing on to Dallas Baptist for a noon contest on Saturday.
