AUSTIN, Texas (October 8, 2015) –
Ariel Froeschl totaled 13 kills for Lubbock Christian University while teammates
Maddie Johnson and
Emily Hanaway each recorded a dozen in a four-set win (25-21, 25-17, 19-25, 25-20) over St. Edward's Thursday night at the Recreation and Convocation Center.
The Lady Chaparrals (10-6, 5-2 Heartland) increased their win streak to five matches, their longest of the 2015 season. In the victory, LCU held onto third place within the conference along with tomorrow's opponent, Dallas Baptist.
Behind an energetic home crowd, the Hilltoppers (4-12, 2-5 Heartland) cruised to a 6-2 lead in set one. The Lady Chaps tied things up at 15-15 on an SEU attack error and took their first lead of the match at 17-16 on a kill by Hanaway. Two more Hanaway kills, a Johnson service ace and Hilltopper error put LCU in front, 23-19, before a final kill by Froeschl gave her team the set one win.
SEU earned the first mark of set two, but an instant trio of Lady Chap points led the way to a 9-3 advantage, sparked by two LCU blocks. The Lady Chaps kept a steady seven-point lead throughout before Froeschl again closed the set on a final kill.
Set three stayed close throughout with the teams trading points up until 17-17 when a kill by SEU's Katie Hendrix's put the Hilltoppers ahead. Two Lady Chap attack errors and a kill from SEU upped the lead to 21-17, but a St. Edward's service error coupled with an LCU service ace cut the lead to two. The final four points of the set came from kills by four different Hilltoppers to send the match to a fourth set.
Head coach
Jennifer Lawrence called for a timeout in set four with SEU leading 8-3, prompting the Lady Chaps to immediately close the margin to 8-6. A kill by Johnson to the far corner gave LCU a 14-13 edge, and the team steadily grew the gap to 21-17. A block by the St. Edward's defense pulled the Hilltoppers to within 21-20, but it was the Lady Chaps' turn to finish with the final four points, capped by a trio of
Christiana Tavo kills for the match victory.
For LCU,
Mallory Powell logged a game-high 49 assists and
Kelsie French notched a team-best 22 digs.
For SEU, Katie Martin had 13 kills and Morgan Beckham registered 28 digs.
The Lady Chaps travel to Dallas Baptist Saturday for a noon matchup.
