LUBBOCK, Texas (October 27, 2015) – Game-highs by an array of Lubbock Christian University volleyball players paced the Lady Chaparrals to 3-0 sweep of former Sooner Athletic Conference rival Wayland Baptist Tuesday night inside the Rip Griffin Center.
Ten kills each by
Maddie Johnson and
Kacey Deterding , 29 assists from
Mallory Powell and 31 digs via
Kelsie French allowed LCU (14-9, 7-5 Heartland) to earn a season sweep of the Pioneers (23-7, 12-1 SAC). French's impressive defensive showing ranked nationally as the seventh-best performance in a three-set match in Division II this season.
The Lady Chaps fell into an early 4-1 deficit but quickly rebounded with a kill by
Christiana Tavo and two from Deterding for a 4-all tie. A pair of
Maddie Johnson kills doubled up the LCU advantage to 12-6, but the Pioneers closed to within 13-11 on a kill by Mallorie Ellis. Four straight points by the Lady Chaps upped the lead to 17-11, while a service ace by
Kyleigh Lucia, a block by Powell alongside
Emily Hanaway, and a kill apiece by Hanaway and Deterding put the frame at 23-13 and out of reach for WBU.
Capitalizing on two Pioneer attack errors to open set two, the Lady Chaps jumped out to a 10-5 advantage that included a pair of kills and block by Deterding. An LCU mishap pulled the Pioneers to within 11-9 before Johnson produced a kill and an ace while WBU erred twice in the midst of a 6-2 Lady Chap run. A kill by
Ariel Froeschl extended the lead to 21-15 before a block by Hanaway and Tavo finished off the set for a 2-0 LCU match edge.
The Pioneers were looking to extend the evening past just three sets by amounting a 10-6 lead in the third frame, but kills by Froeschl, Deterding and Hanaway coupled with a French ace knotted the set at 10-10. WBU regained the lead on an LCU service error, but that was short-lived as the Lady Chaps scored five successive points for a 15-11 lead. Kills by Hanaway and Johnson bookended a block by Powell and Hanaway to push the gap to 18-12.
Catie Cline grew the disparity to 21-13, leading to a final kill by
Maddie Reed to conclude the contest.
The Lady Chaps reenter Heartland play with a match at Texas-Permian Basin Thursday at 7 p.m.
