Last meeting between LCU and StMULUBBOCK, Texas (February 15, 2014) – A three-run inning by St. Mary's erased Lubbock Christian's 2-0 lead in the third, and another Lady Rattler score in the sixth capped a 4-3 Heartland Conference loss for the Lady Chaps Saturday afternoon at Softball Stadium.
LCU was ready to avenge the two losses to the five-time conference champions from the previous day, with Kirstie Cochran taking advantage on a fielding error by the shortstop and becoming the first Lady Chap to reach base. Megan Sullivan's walk pushed Cochran up a base, but a popup to second by
Morgan Colburn marked the second LCU out.
Jessica Loiacano responded with a left field single, and a Lady Rattler error allowed her to scramble to second while Sullivan made it home for the first run of the game and Cochran was right behind her for a 2-0 Lady Chap advantage.
Ashton Bell singled to the pitcher, advancing Loiacano to third base, but a
Katera Eltsosie fly out to right field ended any further LCU scoring opportunities in the inning.
The Lady Rattler scoring run in the third began with Amanda Villa being hit by an Eltsosie pitch and back-to-back doubles by Daniele Nash and Nicole Sardelich, the latter of which brought Villa and Nash around for the first pair of StMU runs. A fielding error by Loiacano allowed Katie Nichols on base and Sardelich advanced to third. A single to right field by Haley Ritcher brought in Sardelich for the go-ahead run and put Nichols on third. LCU was able to end the inning by caging two fly outs by the Lady Lady Rattlers, including an impressive sliding catch by
Katlin Reed in foul territory.
Loiacano and Bell each delivered singles in the next inning, but consecutive flyouts by Eltsosie and Rebecca Billings stopped the runners from advancing until Diana De La Paz singled to center field. On the hit, a Lady Rattler fielding error allowed De La Paz to reach second, put Bell on third and brought Loiacano around to tie the game at 3-3, but Bell was picked off at third to end the run.
St. Mary's final run in the sixth came by way of an RBI single from Villa, scoring LeeAnn Campos for a 4-3 Lady Rattler victory, as the Lady Chaps ended the game in the seventh with three straight groundouts.
Eltsosie (3-2) suffered another loss with eight hits and two strikeouts while Emily Brittain (8-2) earned the win with two hits in three innings of work.
