All-Time Series: LCU leads 14-5
The Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals close out a three-game Heartland Conference series with No. 23 St. Edward's University Saturday at 1 p.m. aiming to end a five-game conference losing streak.
The Chaps had a five-game overall win streak snapped Friday with a pair of losses to the Hilltoppers, which placed their record at 15-15 on the season and 3-6 in conference play. The Chaps had been 3-0 at home in conference play before the 6-1 and 8-4 defeats. The Chaps are hitting .123 in the series after held to seven hits Friday, as SEU starters (Collin Sherrod and Bryce Davis) held LCU to one earned run over 16 innings in a pair of complete game outings.
Brett Wilhelm is the only Chap that had more than one hit Friday (2-for-7). None of the hits went for extra-bases for the Chaps, who lead the conference with 98 extra-base hits.
While LCU was held to seven hits, SEU had 10 different players have hits Friday, with Wesley Harris going 3-for-5 and J.D. Arrowood going 4-for-8. Harris joined teammates Kevin Mayo and A.J. Hermanson each with 3 RBI.
The Chaps will hand the ball to
Levi Westerlund for the start on the mound. He is 1-4 on the season with a 4.74 ERA. Westerlund went without a decision in the start of a 6-5 win over SEU last season, going six innings and allowing three runs off five hits. Cameron Stanton, the son of former major leaguer Mike Stanton, will start for the Hilltoppers. Stanton, 3-0 with a 2.27 ERA this season, allowed two runs without an out recorded last season in a relief outing against LCU and was saddled with a loss.
LCU and SEU first met in 1986 and the Chaparrals have a 14-5 all-time advantage in the series. The Chaps are 6-3 all-time at home against the 'Toppers. LCU swept the season series in Austin last season and had won eight of the prior nine meetings before this season's series. Â
